We offer classes in a collection of mediums to suit all skill levels.From the humble beginner to the discerning master, you will find something here to whet your creative appetite.

We have had the pleasure of teaching people from all walks of life here at SJS. Whether you’re fresh out of school and are looking to explore the opportunities in the jewellery industry or perhaps the nest is empty and you are looking to reinvent yourself and learn how to make the things you’ve always dreamed of, no matter your creative aspiration, SJS welcomes you to explore and discover the many possibilities that await you.

Sydney Jewellery School (SJS) is Australia’s leading independent contemporary jewellery facility for students wishing to learn the art of jewellery making, multi-media creative arts techniques and object ‘d art creation.

Established in 2006, SJS has helped thousands of creative enthusiasts realise their artistic potential. Unlike any other curriculum offered in Australia, SJS has developed a carefully considered class selection that is intended for the student to easily pick and choose their own skill sets without the requirements and obligations that full time education can impose.

The school operates from their own dedicated studio space in Rosebery, an inner South/East suburb of Sydney. Housed in the Heritage Listed Leda Building their inviting studio is flooded with natural light and boasts all the latest tools and equipment in jewellery making.

SJS also provides space for people wishing to access bench space on a casual or daily basis.Have a look at the ‘Our Services’ page on the SJS website for a full list of services including kiln hire, private events and membership.

Many students walk into the doors of SJS not really knowing which way they are going to turn, with so many different mediums on offer it can most certainly feel like a rabbit’s hole of excitement and opportunity.

SJS have helped many students realise their creative goals and have seen students turn their passion into brilliant, thriving businesses. From small online boutiques and local markets to renowned exhibitions and department retailers, SJS have seen their students reach great heights within the jewellery industry.

SJS look forward to assisting you with your creative dreams and hope to see you too successfully selling your very own line of jewellery.

With over 90 courses on offer it is sometimes hard to work out what you want to do first. We often see students take multiple classes until they find “the one” medium that speaks to them. Others will settle for a number of different mediums and not specialise at all, preferring the flexibility that multiple avenues present.

The beauty of SJS is that you can explore as many different mediums as you like without being locked into a full time curriculum. All of SJS’s classes listed on their website show the skill prerequisite required. Many classes do not require any previous skills and are open to all whilst other classes may list a set of skills or prior knowledge that you must carry in order to attend the class.

If you are wanting to make silver jewellery but don’t know where to start, the SJS Metalwork 101 class is designed just for you, covering all essential metalwork techniques over 8 weeks (1 evening per week). Once you have acquired your new metal work skills you may want to branch out and explore the myriad of specialty techniques within the metalwork world such as stone setting, metal etching and electroplating.

Perhaps you prefer polymer or ceramic or beading. Perhaps you’re still not sure which medium speaks to you. Nows the time to find out. Simply look through the online library of SJS classes on offer and enroll in a class that inspires you. Check to see if the skill prerequisites are suitable for you and you can make your booking on the spot.

Once you are through the SJS studio door, it is quite difficult to come out.

SJS concentrates predominately on technique driven classes. This gives students a better opportunity to learn and ‘soak’ in the technique as opposed to brushing over a valuable skill in a quick demonstration in order to complete a structured project. This means that sometimes you do not leave SJS with a finished piece but rather a wealth of knowledge and practice for you to go off and adapt your new skills to your own craft.

SJS also offer a selection of classes that introduce you to a particular material in the jewellery industry such as the recently released Flex Metal Clay™ and Argentium Silver™.

SJS have their finger on the pulse and here is where you will find the latest and greatest in jewellery material and equipment.

SJS have brought many world class artists to Australia, giving you access to some of the greatest talent in the jewellery industry.An impressive collection of artists such as the wonderful Tim McCreight, Nancy Megan Corwin, Cynthia Eid, Keith Lo Bue, Thomas Mann, Majorie Simon, Deb Karash and Robert Dancik have all taught sold out classes at SJS over the past 6 years.

2015 will be another stellar year for SJS with polymer clay artists Melanie Muir and Maggio Maggio teaching the secrets of their specialty techniques. The amazing talents of Anna Davern and her quirky and clever sublimation printing are also on offer in 2015 as well as the very talented Matt Dwyer and his divine stone setting.

M E T A L W O R K 1 0 1If you want to make silver jewellery but have no idea where you would even start then this class is designed especially for you.

This exceptional class covers all the basic skills that you require to move onto more complex tasks when learning to work as a silversmith. It is one of the most comprehensive courses available in Sydney and provides students with 20 hours of class design that blends both pratical hands on teaching and demonstrations by highly skilled teachers who work within the industry.

Through structured learning you will gain an understanding of materials and tools used to create unique metal work jewellery. Saw-piercing, riveting, soldering, texturing and finishing options together with the completion of a project of your own design, using some or all of these methods.

The duration of this class is 8 weeks with 1 evening lesson per week. SJS also offer a Metalwork 101 weekend class however places book out fast as they only run once per term.

Metal clay is a revolutionary product which comes in a clay form, it can easily be manipulated and through firing, the clay fuses as the binder melts away and your sculpted piece becomes solid metal.

Wirework is an essential medium for any good jeweller to know. The ability to design and create your own jewellery findings such as ear wires, hooks and clasps, jump rings, head pins and many other jewellery components is invaluable. Understanding the fundamentals of wirework can escalate your work as you evolve your designs to include new components and connections.

Chainmaille is also another great complementary technique. By connecting jump rings in repeated decorative patterns you are able to create unique and intricate jewellery.

SJS offer wirework and chainmaille classes to suit all skill levels. Most classes are a 1 day duration and concentrate heavily on developing correct technique, once mastered you can then go on to confidently create your own wirework designs.

Pioneered by the likes of Dinosaur Designs and other industry leaders, resin is a medium that allows the artist true expression through the ease of colour mixing and experimentation. Resin is completely open to your interpretation. Create an entire collection or complement another medium with feature colours. Resin knowledge is also useful for epoxy bonding techniques as well as doming and sealing.

Resin is a two part liquid mix that is cast in silicon moulds to set hard. Silicon moulds are available ready made off the shelf in generic shapes and forms however if you really want to create your own resin collection, you will need the invaluable skill of creating moulds from your own designs. SJS offers a selection of different classes for the resin and moulding enthusiast which will allow you to confidently explore the medium.

Polymer clay has come a long way in its relatively short lifespan. The past 30 years have seen its popularity grow as artists discovered its incredible versatility. The added advantages of a low cost medium, able to be baked in a home oven without a kiln made it very attractive to the wider artist movement.

SJS are fortunate to be connected with many amazing polymer artists from around the world and have hosted many workshops with renowned artists. 2015 will be no exception with a star line up including Melanie Muir and Maggie Maggio.

SJS’s resident polymer teacher Sue Fisher has an outstanding talent for this medium and her craftsmanship is impeccable. If you are looking to delve into the polymer world or would like to further your skills and techniques, then SJS is the place you want to be.

This inexpensive medium is a great expression of colour and design. Easily manipulated by heat, acrylics and plastics including Plexiglass and Faux Bone are incredibly forgiving, allowing the artist to explore the same piece of material, over and over again.

Big things are happening for the ceramic world at the moment. Once considered too fragile to associate with jewellery, ceramists from around the world have proven that ceramic jewellery can be beautiful, practical and durable. Ceramic jewellery and homewares are making a strong appearance at many designer markets across the world with so many amazing interpretations of this earthy medium.

The stone like texture, the white translucency and the unique effects that can be added with body stains and glazes makes this medium truly captivating. Whether your taste is for fine and delicate detailing or bold statement pieces, ceramics will surely find a way to inspire you.

S T U D I O A C C E S SIt’s easy to pursue your creative endeavours here at SJS. We offer open access to our fully equiped studio Monday - Friday 10:30am - 5:00pm. Bookings are essential, please contact us on 02 9667 1883 to arrange.

If you are not quite ready to go out on your own and would like to stay under the wing just a little longer, SJS also offer Supervised Studio Access. Students are able to work at their own pace creating their own designs with the benefit of an experienced metalsmith guiding and assisting where needed. Supervised Studio Access dates are scheduled throughout the term and bookings are essential.
