Our first concert of the seasonis one of Russian and Czechmusic. Tchaikovsky’s Romeoand Juliet overture, based onShakespeare’s play, is an ever-popular concert piece. JosefSuk was a pupil and later son-in‐law of Dvořák and like his
mentor was influenced by the folk tunes of his homeland.Scheherazade - a suite in four movements - was described byRimsky-Korsakov as a “kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images anddesigns of Oriental character”.

Callum Smart returns to the WSO to play the BeethovenViolin Concerto in a memorial concert for Guy Woolfenden,the WSO’s principal conductor for 40 years, who died in April2016. Callum was first invited by Guy in 2009 as soloist forthe Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, aged just 13.Divertimento was originally commissioned by the LiverpoolMozart Orchestra and has been a favourite with the WSOon a number of occasions. Brahms’ Symphony No. 1completes the programme.

Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast for choir, baritoneand orchestra has all the drama of an opera performance.
