SCI-ART Workshop$75The teen developmental years can be a period of change, uncertainty, isolation, and stress for young men and women, especially those with disabilities or who are from other underserved populations. Merging scientific and artistic pursuits can help young people develop creativity, objectivity, perseverance, spatial reasoning, innovation, and observational acuity. Through this workshop, in partnership with Art Access, teens will utilize visual art to focus on science. Students will meet at Utah’s Hogle Zoo on Thursday, June 23 and at Art Access on Friday, June 24. If so, come dream at the zoo! This program allows you spend time at the zoo after hours, take a private zoo tour, lead by one of our Eco-Explorers, enjoy a snack, meet our animal ambassadors, and so much more! This interactive program is designed for any school, scout, youth organization, or family group. Campers sleep in a heated/air conditioned building. Utah Master Naturalist Program$175 per personTo register, please visit www.utahmasternaturalist.orgInterested in becoming a Utah Master Naturalist? Each module of the program focuses on studying the different components of Utah’s natural systems including climate, geography, hydrology, plants and animals, as well as how these components interact and are managed. At least half of the time is spent in the field and the remaining time in the classroom. Three credits at Utah State University, per module, are available for an additional fee. Mountains Module (Held at the Zoo)Some of the greatest ecological diversity and scenic beauty in Utah exists in the forest and alpine environments. Throughout these systems, temperature, elevation, and precipitation play an important role in defining plant and animal communities and their interactions. Come join us while we explore these systems and learn about how they function, the plants and animals that live there, and how they are managed. This module consists of 40 hours of instruction, 80-90 percent of which is in the field. Due to the nature of the Mountains class, we will be walking and hiking over some uneven terrain at relatively high altitudes.

Enrichment Extravaganza (general special needs)Ages 6-18It’s not an egg carton; it’s a game of hide-and-seek. It’s not a log; it is an obstacle course. It’s not a toy; it’s animal enrichment! Animals in the wild spend much of their time and energy finding food, building homes, defending their territories and escaping predators. Zoo-life is more predictable – as most animals’ resources are provided for them. Discover firsthand the creative ways Zoo staff comes up with to help them to use that energy. You’ll experience some of the Zoo’s enrichment personally and then meet with keeper to see how the animals use it. This class is specially designed for students with physical disabilities and is wheel chair accessible.

Zoo Just for Little YouZoo Just for Little You is new in 2016 for early learners ages 2-5 with special needs who are working on developmentally appropriate milestones. Activities are movement based and incorporate pretend play, fine and gross motor skills, verbal and nonverbal communication, and other appropriate preschool skills. All abilities are welcome, and classes are wheelchair accessible. To facilitate learning and play, children may bring a neuro-typical friend or sibling of similar age, but all children must be individually registered for class.

Do you dream about animals? Do you think measuring, scrubbing, sweeping and interacting with wild animals are good ways to spend your day? Have you always wanted to be a zookeeper? Well, here is your chance to see if you have what it takes. Come to the Zoo for a hands-on, behind the scenes, fun-filled day. Participants will spend their day with a staff member preparing animal diets, cleaning exhibits and creating enrichment for some of our animals. We will provide lunch, a T-shirt and a Keeper-tastic time!

Restrictions:• Participants must submit a current (within three months of camp date)

and certified negative TB test two weeks prior to camp.• Participants must wear weather-appropriate clothing and shoes that can get dirty and

The Ultimate Camp Experience 2nd – 3rd Grades(Ages 8-9)$325(10% discount for members)If you can only attend one camp this summer, make it this one! Cub ScoutsThe Hogle Zoo Trails patch makes for a fun day at the Zoo with your Cub den! Scouts in the Great Salt Lake Council can earn their badge while visiting the Zoo in uniform, picking up litter on the grounds, and learning about 20 animals they see at the Zoo. Soil and Water Conservation Merit BadgeOur buildings, farms, and quality of life all depend on having clean water and soil. What is soil and water conservation and how are we a part of it? During class, we plan to finish requirements 1-6.

Boy Scouts$15 per childAll registration must be completed online 48 hours before the class. Leaders are free. Scout classes are also open to non-scout students. No unregistered children. Adults may stay, or just sign students in and out. Our merit badge classes were the 2011 Environmental Education Program of the Year for the Utah Society for Environmental Education.

Because of the nature of the badge requirements, we are not able to complete an entire merit badge during class hours. Badge requirements not completed in our classes can be done in advance and signed off at the scheduled class. Blue merit badge cards will be provided.

Teacher/School Programming

Utah’s Chapter FrogWatch USA TrainingFreeHave you ever wanted to help scientists collect data that will make a difference for local wetland communities? Are you interested in becoming a voice for conservation in your community? Do you enjoy visiting wetland areas and listening to frogs? Then FrogWatch USA, the new citizen science conservation program, is for you!

FrogWatch USA is a frog and toad monitoring program where volunteers learn the calls of local species, identify them by song in the field, and record their findings. By collecting data, volunteers not only contribute to knowledge about wetlands and which frog species are found in their area, but they will also be able to educate members of their community about wetland conservation. To date, the data gathered by citizen scientists throughout the country has provided information about frog distribution, wetland health, and climate impacts on wildlife. You will help determine:• which species of frogs and toads are in an area,• if there are rare or invasive species in Utah,• where each species is found, and • when different species breed.

Utah’s Hogle Zoo VolunteersIf you can’t get enough of the Zoo, or just want to see what it’s like to work here, consider becoming a volunteer! Volunteers are an important part of what makes Utah’s Hogle Zoo an exciting and educational experience for our guests. We offer volunteer opportunities in many areas of the Zoo. If you have a passion for animals, conservation and the environment, then Utah’s Hogle Zoo is the place for you.

Or Intern at the Zoo!Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s College Internship Program allows students to utilize their classroom knowledge in a real work setting. Our program combines classroom teaching and hands-on training to help our interns to improve their skills and give students valuable firsthand experience. Students must have at least one full year of college credits. Internship applications are due March 1 and all available internships are filled by May 1. Internship period is from the first week of June and concludes in mid-August. Interns must be available for this 10-week period and all internships are unpaid.
