Medicare

Created under title 18 of The Social Security Act.› Signed in 1965 by President.

Believed Medicare was necessary for elderly people.

Benefits are available to all U.S residents.› Income levels do not have to be met

to qualify. Two parts to Medicare

› Part A› Part B

Part A› Covers all hospital expenses

Part B› Provides standard Medical Care

Ex. Outpatient Surgery

Change to Medicare› Medicare

Modernization Act› Made by George W.

Bush December 8th, 2003

Provided seniors prescription drug benefits and more choices in health care.

Medicaid

Signed into law July 30th, 1965 Available only:

› Low income families/ individuals › Some elderly› disabled

Funded by the state and government

Not available in every state until 1982.

Why it’s important…

Life is very unpredictable…. If you do not have health

insurance and something bad happens you will have to pay the entire fee out of pocket.

46 million Americans do NOT have insurance.› Uninsured people receive less

medical and timely care. For example, if you have

cancer, you are more likely to be diagnosed at a later time when treatment may not be successful.

The Bill….

All must get insurance or have to pay $695 annual fee.

95% of Americans will be insured.

Illegal Immigrants are NOT allowed health insurance.

Young adults can stay on their parents plan until their 26 years old.

Insurance more affordable by providing the largest tax cut for health care in history.

Budget and economy will be more stable

Closes the “donut hole” for senior citizens’ Medicare prescription drugs
