Yourn CouNcrL: THE Nrxr GsxnnlrroNThe Montgomery Co-Radford City Floyd County Youth Council has rvorked since the fall of2018 to understand the diversity of people of different cultures and backgrounds so that amore harmonious cooperation among people can be created. They also lvorked to stimulatethe appreciation of the African-American Culture, so they can be knowledgeable and proud ofthe contributions of African-Americans. They have also continued to rvork tolvard becomingeffective leaders by learning horv to respect opinions of others and have dialogue to uncoverproblems affecting youth today. The first event held last November rvas the annualIntemational Dinner where each member shared information about a country of their choiceincluding the history and conditions affecting the people, culture, and food. Dishesrepresenting each country lvere enjoyed by all. They also had monthly discussions ofproblems affecting youth today in society as rvell as rvithin their schools, and sought rvaysthat they could help resolve them. Youth leamed respect for the contributions of the elderlyand realized that much that they contributed opened doors of opportunity for them. Theyrecognized the elderly via visits and presenting handmade door lvreaths which brought themmuch joy. They served as ushers at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday celebration andparticipated in the program by providing information on why we should continue honoringthis civil rights icon, and a poem lvas read in his honor. Juneteenth lvas organized andcelebrated sharing with other youth and the public the history and struggle of the AfricanAmerican people. They presented historical information and reflected on their contributionsto this country. Talk to Debbie Travis or Angela Sills to get involved rvith our Youth.
