The word hick originated from in the late 14 century. It began as a nickname for Richard from the period of Middle English.

By 1700 it came to mean an “awkward provincial person.”

It is recorded as an adjective by 1914

Now the word as a noun means an unsophisticated person; as an adjective it means an unsophisticated area.

Sentence: The hicks came to town riding in the back of the truck yelling “yee-haw” and shooting their shotguns.
