Objective
The objective of this lesson is to familiarize you with CMC and some basic information about it!
If link is broken, please click here.
This is not a good example of CMC!! (click the box)
Lesson 1
CMC can be defined as the process by which people create, exchange, and perceive information using networked telecommunications systems that facilitate encoding, transmitting, and decoding messages.
Lesson 1
Two forms of CMC:
Synchronous Two persons talking face to face or on the telephone Could also be a group of people in a discussion; one
to many This includes chat rooms and other instant
messaging software
Lesson 1
Two forms of CMC:
Asynchronous A significant delay time in receiving messages when
two or more persons communicate This includes e-mail, most forum lists, and discussion
boards Offline, some forms could be letter writing and
faxing This is the end of Lesson 1
Lesson 2
Student Participation of CMC
There are currently gender issues in CMC
There is discourse analysis of those who participate more than others
Styles, personalities, perceptions, and attitudes are also taken into consideration
Lesson 2
Gender Issues
Female responses are usually more analytical than males.
Males tend to respond more blunt than females.
Females are more willing to adapt to new learning techniques than males.
Lesson 2
Student Discourse Analysis In most online discussions, a small minority
dominate discussion while many “lurk.” This is called “passive-aggressive syndrome.”
Usually, there is twice the amount of communication in online discussions as compared to face to face discussions.
Lesson 2
Faculty Discourse Analysis
Reasons for resistance of online teaching Afraid of technology Afraid of the unknown and extra work involved Threatens the forums of teaching they are used to Too impersonal
This is the end of Lesson 2
Question 1
What does “CMC” stand for?
Cookie Monster’s
Cookie
Computer Medium
Communication
Computer Mediated
Communication
You are right!
CMC stands for “Computer Mediated Communication.” Thank you for not pretending to be a 2nd grader and picking “Cookie Monster’s Cookie.”
Sorry, wrong answer!
CMC does not stand for “Cookie Monster’s Cookie.” Cookie Monster did have a cookie, and he thoroughly enjoyed his cookies; however, CMC has nothing to do with Cookie Monster (or Big Bird).
Sorry, wrong answer!
CMC does not stand for “Computer Medium Communication.” Unfortunately, your photographic memory is not the greatest when it comes to the letter “M.”
Question 2
What are two forms of CMC?
Walkie Talkies &Cheesecake
Synchronous &
Asynchronous
Symbiosis&
Amoeba
Sorry, try again…
We all love cheesecake & walkie talkies are extremely fun to play with; however, they are not forms of CMC.
Correct!!
Two forms of CMC are synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous is an instantaneous response. Asynchronous is when there is a significant
delay period.
Sorry, try again…
I can tell you like your big scientific words, but symbiosis & amoeba have nothing to do with CMC. Nice try though. Symbiosis is a close association of animals
or plants Amoeba is a single celled organism
Question 3
Which statement is incorrect?
Men’s responses to online conversation
are usually more analytical than
female’s.
Females are more willing to adapt to new
learning techniques than males.
A small minority dominating discussion is known as “passive-
aggressive syndrome.”
Correct!!
Men’s responses to online conversations are not usually more analytical than female’s. Females are more analytical in conversation while men are usually more blunt.
Sorry…try again.
Females are definitely more willing to adapt to new learning techniques than males. Most of the time, guys like what they are used to already. Therefore, this answer is true.
Sorry…try again.
A small minority dominating discussion is known as “passive-aggressive syndrome.” Usually, most people involved in discussions “lurk” and do not actually respond. Therefore, this is true.
