KEY TERMINOLOGY

Classification: is the arrangement of things into groups of similar items.

A Dichotomous Key: is a tool used to identify organisms based on contrasting pairs of characteristics.

A Kingdom: is the highest level of biological classification (animals, plants, fungi, protists, and two for bacteria).

SINGLE-CELLED ORGANISM:

• Single-celled organisms live everywhere.

• They are so small you need a microscope to see them, but you can see signs of their existence (getting food, producing waste, and reproducing).

Bacteria

single-celled organism performs basic functions: eats, excretes

waste, reproduces, and grows reproduces asexually through binary

fission or budding Microorganism breaks down remains of dead plants and

animals

Bacteria used in the body to digest food used to make yogurt, cottage cheese,

sour cream, sauerkraut, and pickles also harmful: causes strep throat, lime

disease, y tuberculosis. EX. yeast

Protista Are mostly singe-celled, some have cell

walls, a nucleus, take in food, or make their own food, many can move.

Protista live in almost any environment that contains water. Many protista, such as algae, are photosynthetic and are vital primary producers in ecosystems, particularly in the ocean as part of plankton.

Facts about Fungi!

Some can grow to adult overnight, or so it seems…

Fungi absorb their food from their environment. They decompose other organisms Fungi reproduce through spores

Fungi Mostly multicelled, cell walls, nucleus, absorb food, cannot move

About 70,000

Protista Mostly single-celled, some have cell walls, nucleus, take in food, or make their own food, many can move

Now it’s Your Turn!

HOMEWORK #1: Use the information in the chart of kingdoms of living things to finish your flipcharts.HOMEWORK #2: Make a dichotomous key for the five kingdoms. Use the list of living organisms below and your flipchart guidebook. Algea, penguin, shiitake

mushroom, plancton, yeast, morel mushroom, banana plant, wolf, sunflower, elephant, shark, liverwort, chanterelle, bee.
