An increased awareness about health and wellbeing, particularly in the millennials group has lead the industry to respond by ensuring that those who opt to moderate their alcohol intake are not seen to be ‘missing out’.
Strengthening this trend is a desire to support dry periods in the annual calendar.
In addition, more people are opting to drive and they rightly don’t expect to be limited to a range of unexciting drinks options. Attractive options are there in both the zero and low alcohol categories to satisfy demand and drive up profits.
With the boom set to continue three key factors continue to drive the outstanding growth in the low and no alcohol drinks sector:
The drive towards product premiumisation
A trend towards more mindful drinking
Falling alcohol consumption
- Let them know! Make your customers aware of interesting alternatives to standard carbonated drinks and juices with clear visibility at the bar and throughout your venue. Use impactful point of sale supplied by brands.
- Get the price right! Premium alcohol-free brands should be approximatley two thirds the price of comparable alcoholic products.
- Staff knowledge is essential in selling zero alcohol products. If they can answer questions about calories and sugar content, customers can make an informed decision about which product to choose.
Mocktails are still as popular as ever, create theatre in your outlet with a variety of exciting serves!
- 53% of consumers said they found soft drinks ranges predictable and boring when eating or drinking out.* Stocking a varied range of zero alcohol brands to complement established light drinks brands such as Diet Coke gives your venue a great opportunity to entice customers to trade up.

Burns Night
Chinese New Year
Give Valentine’s Day some fizz!
Burns Bonanza! Burns Night is a great opportunity to bring customers into your outlet during the quietest month of the year. Toast the life of the great poet with an evening of Scottish themed festivities. Scottish music, themed food, tartan decorations and plenty of whisky are key for a successful Burns bash.
Perfect Pairs!• Team up with a Scottish whisky brand such as
Crabbie’s Scotch Whisky.• It’s not just about whisky. BrewDog offer an
exciting range of Scottish Craft Beers that can be enjoyed alone, served with Scottish snacks or even paired with a wee dram of whisky!
• Serve haggis with a drinks pairing such as Scotch, or a cocktail to add value to your offer. It is a simple and cost-effective way to increase your margins.
Make the most of the trend for cocktails with an inventive drink and some entertainment to make for a classic Burns Night.
• Create theatre with Champagne - display using buckets, bottles and POS.
• Include Champagne or Prosecco on your Valentine’s menu.
• Create a meal deal including a glass of fizz.
• Encourage sales by the glass.
• Ensure your staff have tasted the Champagne or Prosecco and can talk about the promotion.
• Correctly chill enough bottles – 3 hours in the fridge, or 15-30 minutes in an ice bucket.
• Create Valentine’s themed cocktails and include fun, interesting garnishes such as rose petals or love heart sweets. 2 for 1 cocktails is a perfect offer. Advertise your offering and train your staff to make them.
• Suggest an aperitif as customers arrive:
2020 is the year of the rat. Chinese New Year is a great post-Christmas occasion to increase footfall and profits at your venue during the two-week long festival.
Dress the part!• Decorate your venue inside and out with
traditional Chinese New Year decorations in red and gold to symbolise happiness and wealth in Chinese culture. Lanterns are popular as well.
Food and drink• Add a few oriental dishes such as dumplings
and crispy noodles to your specials board or create a set Chinese banquet menu for the night.
• It’s a great time to highlight your wine list – in China it’s believed that alcohol can protect you from bad luck. For beer, you can promote Tiger - now available to serve through Heineken Blade.
Add fun to the event• Lucky red envelopes are a Chinese custom that
you could adopt to entice your customers back again by adding in special offer vouchers, such as a free bottle of wine with their next meal.
• The world’s largest firework display! For an all-out celebration, fireworks and festivals are a big part of traditional Chinese New Year celebrations – run a family fun day ending with a fireworks display! See HSE fireworks safety advice here: www.hse.gov.uk/explosives/fireworks/using.htm

Go fOr Grand Slam Glory!

No special TV packages are required.
A Sporting Bonanza On Terrestrial TVHot on the heels of the thrills of the Rugby World Cup comes the 2020 Six Nations Championship. Starting on Saturday 1st February this is must watch sporting action of the highest calibre, with every contest a fist-pumping fight for glory and national pride.
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy go head to head for Grand Slam glory and you can show all of it on terrestrial tv.
Last year’s Six Nations Grand Slam match between Wales vs England attracted...
That’s more viewers than Manchester United's FA Cup clash with Chelsea, the most-watched football match on BBC in 2018/19*
So ensure your outlet is set up to capitalise on these huge figures!
Think about your Big Screen... Make sure you use the best positions for overall visibility and when you check the volume bear in mind the build-up of noise during a big game!
8.9m viewers
Decorate your outlet! Banners and posters make your outlet visually striking and create a great atmosphere. National flag bunting is a great way to add some colour!
Dress for the occasion! Getting your staff to wear rugby shirts or team colours contributes to the atmosphere. England matches will be the busiest so plan your staffing levels well in advance.
Offer half time snacks! Make your offering quick and simple – think hand-held food such as burgers and hot dogs. Taking pre-orders for half time is a great way to ensure hassle free service.
Promote the next match! Don’t forget to promote the forthcoming events at your outlet. Use social media with a dedicated Six Nations plan.
Highlight beers in your range! Make sure to highlight all beers in your range that are relevant to the participating nations. In addition to the traditional lagers such as Heineken, make sure your real ale and craft range are clearly visible throughout the tournament.
Key Tactics
77% of Six Nations viewers drink beer at least once a month!**
Live rugby is a fantastic opportunity to get fans into your outlet before and after the game.
Although beer is the most popular choice on match days, the Six Nations also presents a huge opportunity to boost sales of wine, spirits, soft drinks and snacks.
Research suggests that Rugby fans also enjoy drinking red and rosé wines, therefore ensure you don't restrict your offer to beer alone.
Watching rugby can be a family event and coupled with the fact that 21% of adults prefer not to drink, a good soft drinks range is vital. This should include low and no-sugar options like Coca-Cola Zero Sugar for health-conscious customers.***
