"GOING WITH THE DOGS"It was 4 and a half years ago when 1

introduced myself to my friends and neighborsat Hawthorne. Since that time many newpeople have moved into Hawthorne and Ithought a repeat of some of the old informationmight be in order.

My name is Rial and pronounced "ree-al". I am a 6-year-old golden retriever (don't letthe white hair around my eyes and mouth foolyou, I'm still young and energetic). My .partner/owner is Colleen Kollmann, she IStotally blind, and we live at 206 JacarandaDrive. I have my special relief area in the backof our home and I am never allowed to roamfree (I couldn't keep my eye on Colleen if Iwandered). As a service animal I am allowedto live in Hawthorne and to go anywhereColleen goes.

Colleen and I received our training atThe Seeing Eye in Morristown, New Jersey.Although I am very smart, I am trained to takeinstruction from only Colleen. So, if you aregiving directions in how to get somewhere, inor out of Hawthorne, you need totell Colleen, who then gives me

directions. You should nevergrab my harness or Colleen'sarm as this startles us. Just askif we would like assistance and

Colleen will telt you what shewould like you to do.

When we walk, wealways walk on the left, facing traffic, as allpedestrians in Hawthorne are supposed to d.o.When" we meet walkers coming towards us, Itgets confusing. I use the edge of the road asmy guide, but sometimes I get a little far ?uttrying to avoid sprinklers or a parked vehicle. When you drive past us, we try to be sure togive you enough room to stay on the road andnot have to hit the grass to avoid hitting us.Please don't try to pet me or ask me torespond to your greeting when I am working. Ifyou talk to Colleen, she will drop the harnessand I am then free to greet you and you cangreet me too (pats on the head, scratching

behind my ears or under the chin are all nice. Irealty prefer belly rubs, but when I am wearingthe harness it becomes a bit difficult althoughsome friends have that process down pat.)

At each intersection, I "indent." Thatmeans I go around the comer a few steps andstop. This allows Colleen to know where weare and to decide if we continue down the newstreet or cross it and continue in the samedirection. When we come to a curb, I move infront of Colleen and stop. She feels with herfoot to determine what the reason is andcommands me "up." When I move, Colleencan tell by the angle of the harness whetherthe step is up or down. Sometimes she tellsme to "find" a location such as the clubhousedoor or the trashcans, or the mailbox. Forinst~nce, if we are coming home on the side ofthe street across from our home, she teUs meto "find the box" and I stop in front of themailbox, which is directly across from ourdriveway. We then make a right tum, cross thestreet when it is safe to do so, and continue oninto our screen porch.

My behavior in the clubhouse is alwayscalm and quiet, although I get a bit excitedwhen I see certain friends. At Board meetingsyou can see my tail wagging under the tableskirt. During meals, I lay under the table, but Iam not supposed to eat people food so I try toignore all scraps that fall to the floor(sometimes it's hard to resist as I am a dog). When meals are served buffet style, Colleenusually leaves me tied to a table leg and ~alkswith a "sighted guide" to get her meal. Thisway, I don't get in anyone's way and no doghair or licks get on other people. Whensomeone comes to visit me at home, Isometimes bark to be sure Colleen knowssomeone is there (this is a "no-no" and upsetsColleen a lot as she doesn't want us to bethrown out of the park). I love showing visitorsmy soft toys and always want to ~Iay withthem even if Colleen IS more senous. Weboth love living in Hawthorne and appreciatethe love and caring which is so freely given toboth of us. We hope we get to meet yousometime soon.(Article submitted by Colleen Kollmann)

RESIDENT NEWS

In May, Charles and I went to San Diego toattend the North American Quilling Guild AGM(annual general meeting). Friday was registrationwith a room to do random Quilling and gettingacquainted. Charles went to find where there wereradio control flying sites and hobby shops.

Saturday was the day for entering any piecesfor competition. There was a separate classificationfor "beginner's" (less than 3 years) and another for"accomplished". Many classes were held in theafternoon and as many as four going at a time. There were a few dealers of Quilling supplies, sowe could shop-shop-shop. Saturday night they hadan excursion to Seaport Village for us. Many shopsand restaurants on the seaside.

Then it was Sunday brunch and time forawards. Besides three categories for beginnersthere were four categories for accomplished #1;only quilled framed picture #2; above and beyondQuilling (using things other than Quilling such asshells, water colors, etc.) #3; stand alone Quilling(must be stand alone with Quilling only) and #4;cards.

I entered all but the card category. I had nohope of winning, as there were so many greatpieces. What a SURPRISE when my name wascalled for 1st prize in Above & Beyond Quilling. Ientered one of my aquariums. Then when my namewas called for 2nd prize in Stand Alone category, Icouldn't believe it!!! The quilled egg that I hadentered was a last minute thing that I happened tothrow in my bag because there was room! !!

The best thing about the competition wasthat the judging was done by vote by other quillers. To win by judgment of your peers is special.(Article submitted by Lois Weber)
