The Penobscot are located in the border of Canada and in the north east of the United States of America, especially in Maine, which is a city that is below Boston. The Penobscot are also located in the Penobscot Indian Island Reservation. This reservation is located in the Unites States. This reservation is home for many Penobscot and it was established in 1973. This reservation has the Penobscot beside, that’s used for many activities.

One individual that influenced this tribe was Barry Dana. In 1999 he was the Bachama of this tribe. Before being the Bachama, he was a teacher of the Maine Reservation. He also fought against the Penobscot language, because it was going to be taken. In various occasions, Penobscot were going to token away lands, but Barry Dana was one of the people who fought against this enemies and finally could give ones again this lands to his family, the Penobscot.

The decision of the Europeans to settle in the Americas affect the Penobscot a lot because they had to front wars, and many more things. They first Europeans who settle these lands were the French and England people. After they arrived, the name that the Penobscot have given their land, disappeared, and was named New England. Penobscot then had to fight many wars for lands, properties, resources, etc. With the French there wasn’t a real problem, but with the British yes there was. Some evidence that the Penobscot and the British had a problem, was that before the Revolutionary War, the British fought against the Penobscot and French people.

Page 26: Canada and north east part of the united states Maine Indian Island Reservation Penobscot river

Some immediate and long term effects that caused the Europeans and the Native Americans were: after a war between French and Penobscot against the English, 75% of the Penobscot population died. This brought a lot of suffer, but not enough because after this the Penobscot decided to help the Americans in the Revolutionary War. The decision of the Penobscot choosing the Americans for fighting as a group in the Revolutionary War, make them have the possibility of staying in their houses in New England. In New England there was a state called Maine.

Page 27: Canada and north east part of the united states Maine Indian Island Reservation Penobscot river

In Maine they were assigned an area that known where theirs. The reason of why the Americans gave them this land was because

first of all, they helped fight, and second, they won the war, and of prize they were given this land. In 1980 the Penobscot were stolen a big part of land, by their white neighbors. After arguing and fighting they finally got back a part of their land. The Europeans had to do with the Revolutionary War, because when the French and the Penobscot faugh against the British and many Penobscot died, made the Penobscot want to fight the Revolutionary War that was against the British again. They wanted to show the British that they were also strong and that they could win too. Eventually, the British were able to notice what the Penobscot wanted to show, because they failed, they were beaten by the Penobscot and the Americans. These were some effect that Native Americans and the Europeans did.

When the Europeans started settling in the Americas, they started building fisheries and dams, and they also started overhunting, this destroyed their traditional economy. They stole fish from their rivers. One of the worst things they did was that they use some of the Penobscot as slaves, without paying them or giving them something for paying. Besides all that, they invaded their lands and towns knowing that the lands and towns were the only things that they had besides their family. And last, they got all the different little tribes of Penobscot and mixed them, making families abandon each other.
