Citrus Fruit on ShowIn Wonderland

“So she sat on, with closed eyes, and half believed herself inWonderland, though [Alice] knew she had but to open them again,

and all would change to dull reality” Lewis Carroll

Surprised by the unexpected beauty of Cannero and itsgardens, visitors of past editions have often described itas a “Wonderland”, which became the inspiration for theexhibition in the Sala Pietro Carmine. The dreamlike, surreal atmosphere of Lewis Carroll's fairytale has been recreated as the background setting for thedisplay of the incredible variety of these winter fruits … astroll amid colors, scents and brushstrokes of fantasy, in agarden where nonsensical decorations, Victorian fancyand sensory suggestions all merge together sans rhymeor reason.Designed to pleasantly surprise the visitor, as well asexplore new ways of presentation, yet with the spotlightalways on the stars of the event: the great variety of cit-rus fruit found in Cannero’s incredible gardens.

Plants, books and publications, sweets and perfume available

Once again the colourfulorbs will be arranged in a bright sheltered corner in aninterpretation of the idea of a “garden town”. A newand surprising vision of the concept of awareness andsafeguarding of the territory, developed through theintroduction of different materials. The installation isthe result of the work of a group of volunteers (mem-bers of the community and students) coordinated andled by the landscape designer Michela Pasquali andarchitect Federica Cornalba, in collaboration with theAssociazione Culturale Gabaré.

Exhibits

After winning the Gold Medal at the 2016 LondonBotanical Art Show and being exhibited at theBotanical Garden of Florence and at Murabilia in Lucca, these 25 precious watercolor portraits, a number ofwhich depict historic varieties of the Medicea collec-tion, are now on display here in Cannero Riviera.

Simonetta Occhipinti, member of the American Societyof Botanical Artists and the Circolo degli Artisti Casa diDante, has exhibited her works at the Museum of NaturalHistory and the Accademia dei Georgofili in Florence, theUniversity of Camerino, Lindley Hall in London, and theBotanical Garden of Padua, where she participated in theBotanical Art Worldwide in 2018. The artist’s refined tech-nique, although solidly rooted in the in-depth study ofRenaissance painting, is rendered contemporary by her par-ticular use of light and shading.
