Ruby Willetts, Louise Spooner, Lauren Thompson, Sophie Maddison and Sophie Bradley had raised the money by organising a Variety Show that involved students from the college. The event was held in late October and included singers and dancers from all year groups. As the audience of older students in the school were arriving, they were shown short videos about the work carried out by Help for Heroes and some of the servicemen and women who have benefitted from this. The fundraising formed part of the girls’ GCSE Citizenship coursework where they had to choose a charity or voluntary organi- sation and raise awareness for the cause and the work they do, informing others in school or the local community. The girls decided to go a step further and also raise money for the charity while undertaking this part of their Citizenship work. Skate park vandalisedChilton Town Council were saddened to hear that the newly installed Skate Park in the town had been mali-ciously vandalised. On arrival at site it was apparent that large volumes of oil had been poured and spread all over the facility, which is now deemed unfit to use until the Council investigate methods, cost

and timescales to rectify. Please do not allow your children to use the facility as it is unsafe. The police attended the scene and are now inves-tigating. If anyone has any information the Town Council would like to urge people to contact the police in confidence on 0345 60 60 365.

Chilton Town Clerk, Mr Paul Gray said, “The Council are disgusted with this act of criminal damage and are offering a substantial reward leading to the conviction of the culprits. Whoever has done this has deliberately set about preventing children from Chilton from enjoying their facilities.”

Ferryhill Town Council has won a planning appeal against a decision made by the Planning Authority, Durham County Council. The Town Council had created a footpath link running from Duncombe Cemetery to The Ferryhill Carrs Nature reserve. However an objection was received claiming the footpath was dangerous. Three expert Health and

Safety officers all agreed that the footpath was safe, but despite this a restriction was placed on the planning applica-tion requiring a fence to be erected along the full 300m length of the path. This would have cost Ferryhill Tax payers several thousand pounds. However following an appeal to the Planning In-spectorate this condition

has been overturned. The footpath running from the cemetery to the Carrs is now open during light hours; the gate connecting the cemetery to the Carrs is locked on an evening. This means that visitors to the Carrs can use the new car park in Duncombe cemetery when visiting the Carrs and can use the temporary toilets there also.

Dear Editor,

How ‘long suffering’ do the people of Ferryhill have to be? How long do we quietly put up with empty shelves, lack of selection and high prices in the local Coop store?

The shop has, almost, a monopoly position within the central village location yet they take their customers for granted. I don’t in any way hold the assistants at fault, for they are not responsible for the late, or non-deliveries, the de-listing of popular items or the availability of expensive ranges rather inexpensive offers/deals ect.

I decided to take action and call the free phone telephone number on the Dividend Card. They said they were unaware of any problems and would investigate and return my call the following day. The return call was, like their deliveries a ‘no show’.

Many people leave the village and shop in the nearby Supermarkets but what of those who have to shop locally, the elderly, disabled, those who are ill and families with no car. The Coop advertises itself as an Ethical Retailer, is this an ethical way to treat customers?

Name & Address withheld on request.

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor of the Chapter, My sister and I were so thrilled to read Vince Elsbury's "Chilton's Past Times & People through the Years". In the first line reference is made to Mr. Wheldon the painter. Well he was our dear dad. He was always known as the Painter and we were always known as the Painter's daughters. Juliet still lives in Chilton but I live in Teesside. Every reference mentioned in the poem was known to us and brought back such fond memories. It seemed to us in those days we knew everyone in Chilton but sadly that does not seem to be the case now. It was a very sociable place where a visit to the Coop, Thompsons Red Stamp Store, Bobby Moreton's general dealers or Mattison's the butchers meant meeting and talking to many people. Yours sincerely, Marjorie Reah nee Wheldon and Juliet Robinson nee Wheldon.

Dear Editor, After 4 months of trying residents of Ferryhill have finally succeeded in having a Parish Poll in relation to the Ferryhill Town Council's debit card scandal. The Poll will be held on Thursday 17th November between 4pm and 9pm Residents should, as a rule of thumb, attend the Polling Station which they normally attend when there are Local Government or General elections. Because of the closure of the Leisure Centre and problems at Cleves Cross Grange the only Polling Station in the Broom ward will be located at the Broom Primary School. Councillor Brian Gibson
