What is the European Union?

As well as being a UK citizen, you are also a citizen of the European Union (EU).

The European Union is made up of twenty-seven European countries, whose governments work together with the aim of becoming safer, and politically and economically stronger.

The EU was formed in the aftermath of the Second World War, when European countries took stock of the damage done, and vowed to join together to prevent such killing and destruction ever happening again.

The twelve stars of the flag symbolize the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe.
