President's Report

By all accounts, the AGM went well so thanks toPete Phillips who chaired the meeting in myabsence, and Tony Metcalfwho, once again, capably managed the election of office bearersprocess.I would like to thank the retiring office bearers,Pete Phillips, David Wallace and Derek Rutterfor their contributions. Derek, in particular, hasbeen the club auditor for as long as anybody canremember, so well done and thanks. Pete hasbeen instrumental in lifting our public relationsimage with new signage and displays andarranging our participation in various 4WDshows, as well as being a club representativewith 4 Wheel Drive SA. David has contributedon the general committee with a particular flairfor arranging Christmas functions. All haveindicated their desire to remain active membersof the club.I look forward to working more closely withGeoff Playford, as our new Vice President, andGerry & Anne Schmied as general committeemembers. Tony Metcalf is now our auditor. (isthere nothing this man can’t do?)The working bee at Anne & Gerry’s property wasa great success thanks to the fourteen memberswho came and put in a solid day. The guysmanaged to remove 60 metres of fire damagedfence and retaining wall and replace it with aspanking new treated pine sleeper wall while theladies assisted Anne in the garden clean up,planting some of the donated plants and withcatering duties. Anne, Gerry and their twodaughters were very thankful and rewarded uswith a great BBQ lunch and fresh baked sconesfor afternoon tea. Look for the trip report withphotographic evidence and another covering thecurry lunch the previous weekend. The Land Rover Show at Melrose will be overby the time you read this so the trip report shouldbe in the next issue. The guest speaker calendaris looking particularly interesting for the next 3or 4 months and includes a visit to the RedArcfactory at Lonsdale. Having recently fitted a newRedArc caravan brake controller I am keen tocheck out any new products they may have.

Safe TravelsPeter Allmand.

Editor's Note

It is nice to have a large number of trip reportscoming in with enough material for probably thenext two magazines, thanks to all who havesupplied those reports.

I will be away for May and the first week of Juneso I will hand the Editor's hat over to ourPresident for the next two issues. Pleaseremember to send all magazine articles to himduring this period.

While in the UK I will visit the Land Roverfactory as other club members have done andwill have a report on that I'm sure.

Bendleby Trip Report 6 March 2015 (from the advance party!)

5 Vehicles arrived at Bendelby Ranges on Thursday afternoon and settled into an early Sundowners, followed by dinner. It was a beautiful evening with a full moon lighting up the amazing surroundings.3 vehicles, Garry Cooper and Gabriel, (D4) Michael Bull (D2) and Jaquie and I (D4) decided to take onthe ‘medium’ rated track, (Kokoda) on Friday morning. After completing registration and receiving some local advice we also decided to do the North SouthRidge - the views on this day were said to be magnificent. We set off at 10.30 am and followed the maps produced by the Station. The initial drive was relativelyeasy, but there were some steep sections to the top of the Ridge – however, the drive was worth it - theviews were amazing! (See photos).

On the way up we saw thebiggest kangaroo I have everseen – he must have been over 6foot tall! Fortunately, he did notlike the look of us and movedaway quickly. After a brief stop for photos wecommenced the descent, whichwith the help ofHill DescentControl was also uneventful. Wethen arrived at the KokodaTrack, which is a one-way trackfor obvious reasons.!This was a track that requiredlow range and HDC in many, many, many places. Apart fromthe one minor misplacement of a

wheel, the track was again traversed without incident – the capability of the Land Rovers made the toughseem relatively easy! There was one spot where we were coming down a very steep part of the track, andwe were being watched by 2 kangaroos, with a look that said, ’why is it so difficult – we run down thatpart! ’ (See photo)At the end of the track we stoppedfor a snack (Michael’s packet ofTim Tams did not last long! ! ! ) andmet up with Warren (The stationowner) – he joined us for while, andhis dry sense of humour wasimmediately apparent. He referredto an old Land Rover wreck he hadby the shed, and promptly advisedus he switched to Toyotas in the1980’s!Our journey back challenged theNavigator (who shall go unnamed),and we ended up coming back thelong way and drove Black OakDrive Track as well. The journey was completed in around 1 .5 hours – some excellent 4 wheel driving and amazing scenery. We then settled back for lunch, and to wait for the main party to arrive.

Roll call for the 14 cars commenced at 9.30am and we headed out ofThe Springs camp ground to Beltonroad. A quick stop by the monument for a photo shoot and we were on our way again. We passed WeiraDowns HS towards the Belton township site.

Belton property inspection and the vehicles lined up

out front.

As John has already published the history of sites we are to visit, I will not repeat them in this report. We passed through a gate and someone indicated that on some other trips, lollies were left for Tail endCharlie in appreciation of the need to close gates. Charlie managed to get a couple of lollies as well as agooey one.

At the ruins of Prince Alfred Copper Mine, we stopped for morning tea. We spent half an hour exploringthis lovely site and fossicked a few pieces of small green rocks embedded with copper.

Continuing on Baratta Road and then turn towards the Hawker/Orroroo Road, we travelled towardsCarrieton passing the Yanyarrie Whim (a large stone tank with a local slate trough built for wateringstock) on the bank ofCoonatto Creek. Carrieton town is completely shut due to the long weekendholiday. We had lunch at the picnic spot beside the Shire Hall, which had a grand ceramic mural depictinghistory of the town, local industries, flora and fauna. After lunch we proceed to the near deserted town ofHammond. The pub below is still standing and thelocal bank is for sale.

On to Johnburgh to explore the Hotel ruin and a big drill beside the Hotel. Unfortunately there was no‘geocaching’ due to no mobile reception.

Thank you John for leading this informative trip and to Michael for closing all those gates!

Back at camp, we enjoyed another Happy Hour followed by the traditional Quiz organised by our QuizMaster, Michael. There is always a surprise in store for us and this time, it was Airline logos. Somemembers indicated that the last musical quiz was too easy and this time round, they should have nothingto complain about! Winners – 1 st prize went to Peter and Mary, 2nd prize went to Tony and Cheryl and3rd prize went to Steve and Rose.A wonderful day was had by all, finishing with a roaring fire in the fire-pit while watching a full moonrising.

Trip Report ; Ladies training run with Tony Metcalf.

Sunday 8/3/1 5

On Sunday morning a group of 6 ladies [Cheryl, Pamela, Betty, Mary, Anne and Jaquie] gathered in theirvehicles at the 4 Wheel drive training track opposite the homestead to take part in lessons with Tony. There were a few obvious nerves and butterflies as Tony firstly walked with us along the coursediscussing how to approach each obstacle!

What became obvious quite quickly, was that the cars we were driving were to be ‘Trusted! As drivers,we must select the correct assistance from the vehicles be it low range, hill descent control, clearanceheight, etc!

Two of the obstacles were very steep jump ups and descents on the river bank and after inspecting closelyand discussing the deep ruts and what to avoid etc, all of the students declared that they didn’t want toattempt those two despite some pressure and coaching from the partners present! !

It was now time for us to take turns driving the course with Tony seated next to us. Cheryl went first andmade the job look pretty easy. The group each went around with no real dramas with Tony’s expertguidance on hand.Special mention must go to Mary who was driving Pete’s Rangie for the very first time, and bravely tookit around the track and came back to much applause! !We must also applaud the special effort ofAnne who decided to give the steep downhill into the creek beda go. After studying the approach carefully with Tony, Anne guided the Range Rover very masterfullydown the bank again to much applause.

We were all pretty impressed by the abilities of our vehicles and how they handled the challengespresented. It was a very worthwhile training run and we thank Tony for his expert advice and trust he hasn’t got toomany more grey hairs as a result! !

Jaquie Gillen.
