While none of us particularly care for change, it is inevitable. The thing that is interesting, to me, is that as much change as we go through in our life, we should be used to it. ASA National has gone through some changes. A couple years ago. it looked like they would not survive, they were loosing money at a tremendous rate. After some major changes, they are turning themselves around and have stopped loosing money. They are looking for new benefits to our members. The relationship between National and the Affili- ates is one of cooperation and working together, to better serve our members. On a more local level, ASAAZ is going through some changes, some have been easy and some are tougher. The Board of Directors has been working to insure the long term viability of our association. One of the changes, was to move the Sunrise Training Expo to Phoenix. We also made some changes to the class type structure. Most of what we did worked well, a few things flopped. We did not fail, however we did learn a couple ways, not to do things. For the most part, the comments about Sunrise were positive. In realizing that making changes can up set the apple cart, for some people, the board committed to holding Sunrise, in Phoenix, for two years. The results will be reevaluated after next year to see how the event went. At that point we may move it again or leave it in Phoenix, time will tell. Plans are already being started for next years event. The evaluations and comments have been read and are being treated accordingly. There is a meeting planed, with the venders, to see how we can work together to improve Sunrise. After some probing, they will say what they liked, it was getting the rebate check. This was something tangible, something they could hold in their hand. It was an easy to see benefit. But, times change and things change. ASA still offers benefits, we just have to see them differently. What are you looking for , cost savings, networking, training or ??? If you have an idea for a different benefit, let the board know. We cannot provide it, if we do not know what the mem- bers are looking for. I recently attended the JTED automotive awards banquet in Tucson. It was an enjoyable and uplifting experience. This event recognizes the best student from the different High Schools auto and collision shop programs. It was good to see and hear from future technicians and shop owners. Bob Schlanger and his crew did a great job!! If you ever get a chance to attend this event, do so. Attending it, was almost a benefit of belonging to ASA. My term as state chairman is almost over. It is with bitter sweat that this last article is composed. The job has had its highs and its lows, its good and its bad, its successes and its disappoint- ments. When talking to people about the benefits of belonging to ASA, there seems to be a reoccurring theme, that comes up fairly often. They sure do miss the rebate from the workers comp program. Field Trip to Yuma Proving Grounds Friday April 4th was an interesting day for 13 fellow ASA members. We were able to tour the very secretive GM Desert Proving Grounds in Yuma. Two members of the Phoenix board formerly worked at the now closed GM facility in Mesa, Cary Lockwood and Lee Miller. Through their con-tacts at GM a behind the scenes look was arranged with Frank West, manager of the Yuma Proving Grounds. Upon arrival the group was shown an overview presentation showing similarities to the now closed Mesa facility and the new location in Yuma. Although Yuma is much smaller in building square footage the high speed oval track and other Ride Develop-ment road systems are quite impressive and similar to those that were at Mesa. The next portion of the tour was of the 22 hoist garage, transmission build room, fabrication/machine shop and the shipping and receiving ware-house. Shipping is a very busy group as vehicles from all over the world pass through there for hot weather testing. At this point we were separated into two groups and piled into vans for a tour of the circle track and various road systems. We wit-nessed a demonstration of an electric powered Chevrolet Spark passing thru the water/grit trough, park pawl test on a hill and two

Corvettes running high speed on the circle track. When we arrived at the multi acre asphalt skid pad the two Corvette showed up for some very aggressive driving ma-neuvers. Rob Slagle of S/S Tire would like to have the contract to supply the tires for the Vettes as they had lots of smoke coming off

of them! Our final stop was at the Fuel station. It can dispense multiple types of fuel and blending is also available at the pumps. When fuel is recovered from test vehicles it is used to power the on prop-erty transportation vehicles. We were unable to take cameras and phones into the facility because of security reason so I could not take any pictures while there. I have included a few that I have found on the internet that were approved by GM and one of our pit stop near Gila Bend.

SCRS Examines Repairer Ability to Control Data Flow Article details ways repairers may be able to manage how “data pumps” access file information Prosser, Washington, April 24, 2014 — Many repairers are un-aware of the breadth of data being extracted from their servers, where it is being extracted from, what settings they could employ to better control the flow of information, or even how that informa-tion may be used beyond its intended purpose. For years, the Soci-ety of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) has alerted its members about the potential risk and liability associated with inadequate control over estimate data and business information. As one recent example, SCRS was notified of growing concerns relative to the collection of data through participation in the Part-sTrader parts procurement program. As the program rolled out across the nation, more questions began to arise when end-users noticed key identifying information from non-State Farm estimate files populating their PartsTrader dashboard. The repairer concern surrounds the amount of non-voluntary information being provided through the data collection process which could offer valuable in-formation surrounding market volume and shop volume, raising further concerns over the potential of violating agreements with non-involved carriers by sharing information with an unrelated third-party.

SCRS researched the issue with PartsTrader and each of the esti-mating system providers to identify the means and extent in which the data is being accessed and collected; and inquiring if repair facility end-users have options to restrict non-required data from being collected, accessed or shared. As a result of that research, SCRS issued an article outlining the resulting responses from each of the technology organizations. The article concludes that: • Technology has increased the ability to communicate information amongst businesses; however, the increase of applications that in-discriminately extract data in the background for unknown or unin-tended purposes is a concern for repairers who have obligations to protect data generated by their business. • There are advancements being made, or already in place, from some estimating system providers which allow collision repair fa-cilities to maintain better control over the data files being exported from the estimating systems to other data collection sources. • The solutions and options for each estimating system vary, so it is important to compare capabilities of the software programs relative to features that allow greater control over unwanted data transfer, and to make any necessary profile changes in line with individual business practices. AMI Accepting Applications for Five Scholarships - Application Deadline is June 20th The Automotive Management Institute (AMI) is accepting applications for the following five scholarships to be awarded this year: the Emil Stanley Merit Award, the BodyShop Business Magazine Scholarship, the Richard Cossette/Gale Westerlund Memorial Scholarship, the Tom B. Babcox Memorial Scholarship and the Arrowhead Specialty Markets “High Octane” Scholar-ship.

Three scholarships help pay expenses for recipients to attend the 2014 International Autobody Congress & Exposition (NACE) in Detroit, July 30-Aug. 2. These scholarships are the Emil Stanley Merit Award, the BodyShop Business Magazine Scholar-ship and the Richard Cossette/Gale Westerlund Memorial Schol-arship.

The $1,000 Emil Stanley Merit Award is awarded annually to an individual who works in an Automotive Service Association (ASA) Collision Division member-business in good standing and who displays a desire to improve their business skills through management education. The 2014 award marks the 24th year in which AMI and ASA have honored Emil Stanley with this com-memorative management-oriented scholarship.

The $1,000 BodyShop Business Magazine Scholarship is also presented annually. AMI’s resource development effort, EX-CEL, in conjunction with Babcox Media, established the scholar-ship that is awarded to an ASA Collision Division member-business in good standing and who displays a desire to improve their business skills through management education.

The $1,000 Richard Cossette/Gale Westerlund Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an ASA Collision Division member-business in good standing and who displays a desire to improve their business skills through management education. The scholar-ship offered in conjunction with ASA was created to honor the contributions these two industry leaders made to AMI, ASA and the collision repair industry.

NACE, the world’s largest collision repair event is sponsored by ASA and represents the only B2B event of its kind specifically designed for collision repair industry professionals from around the globe. NACE features a comprehensive educational confer-ence offering AMI-approved management seminars, technical courses and industry sessions. The expo offers hundreds of di-verse exhibiting companies displaying the latest equipment, prod-ucts, services and technology available to today’s collision repair industry.

The remaining two annual scholarships help cover expenses for recipients to attend the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) in Detroit, July 31-Aug. 2. These scholarships are the Tom B. Babcox Memorial Scholarship and the Arrowhead Specialty Markets “High Octane” Scholarship.

The $1,000 Tom B. Babcox Memorial Scholarship was established by EXCEL, in conjunction with Babcox Media. It is awarded to an ASA Mechanical Division member-business in good standing and who displays a desire to improve their business skills through management education.

The $1,000 Arrowhead Specialty Markets “High Octane” Scholarship was established by EXCEL, in conjunction with Ar-rowhead’s Specialty Markets. It is awarded to an ASA Mechanical Division member-business in good standing and who displays a desire to improve their business skills through management educa-tion.

CARS, also sponsored by ASA, features a high-quality educa-tion lineup led by industry leaders, along with an exhibitor show-case of automotive service and repair related equipment, products and services.

Along with NACE/CARS, a series of automotive repair in-dustry events and co-located meetings will take place July 28-Aug. 2, 2014. Early in the week there will be a series of Board and other private meetings. Tuesday will host the CIC quarterly meeting. Wednesday will highlight the I-CAR conference and gala 35th an-niversary networking reception. Thursday and Friday will be the NACE/CARS expo along with numerous NACE and CARS busi-ness and technical sessions, the Collision Repair Executive Sympo-sium (CRES), the Mechanical Symposium, the Automotive Man-agement Institute (AMI) graduation ceremony and on-site I-CAR training.

Additional details and requirements are available on the AMI website at www.AMIonline.org.

To request a scholarship application, call AMI at (800) 272-7467, ext. 101, or fill out a scholarship application online at www.AMIonline.org. Applications must be received by AMI on or before June 20, 2014. The scholarship recipient will be notified by AMI on or before June 30, 2014.

AMI was established in 1989 to answer the demand for con-tinuing education tailored specifically for the business needs of the automotive service industry. The Institute offers the Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation, the first business man-agement accreditation exclusively for the automotive service pro-fessional. To date, AMI programs have attracted more than 229,500 enrollments throughout North America. AMI is a not-for-profit educational foundation to which tax-deductible contributions can be made. For more information about the Institute, its curricu-lum, or EXCEL, please contact AMI at (800) 272-7467 ext. 129, or visit the AMI website at www.AMIonline.org.
