Reading like a…

As teachers, we are ALL responsible for Literacy in our classroom. No, we are not all becoming reading teachers, but we are teaching our students to understand the “text” and language of our content.

Teachers judge, analyze, and collect data for every student.

Teachers critique and evaluate their personal performance and that of the students in order to grow.

Teachers create challenges in order to help students foster independence and make real-world connections.

Working in your content group, create a list of actions you perform in you classroom while analyzing your text.

• Can be literal (checking for understanding) but must also involve analysis, synthesis, evaluation.

• Focus on word, sentence, and paragraph, as well as larger ideas, themes, or events.

• Focus on difficult portions of text in order to enhance reading proficiency.

• Can also include prompts for writing and discussion questions.

Closing Remarks

• There is no one right way to have students work with text- dependent questions.

• Providing for the differing needs of students means providing and scaffolding supports differentially - not asking easier questions or substituting simpler text.

• The CCSS require ALL students to read and engage with grade appropriate complex text regularly. This requires new ways of working in our classrooms.
