16 th of November 2019 MEDIA STATEMENT Vandalism at the Townsville Mosque in QLD We are saddened to report another attack on an Australian mosque. Yesterday, the Townsville Mosque in QLD was vandalised. Offensive language was drawn onto the mosque exterior and sign. It was done on the most sacred of days for Muslims, being the day of Friday congregational prayers. Large numbers of people attend the mosque to pray on this day. We have spoken to the religious leader at the mosque. The local community is concerned, disappointed and upset. This incident is yet another example of the rising experience of Islamophobia. Islamophobia is a serious threat and affects the very core of our society in giving expression to hate and division. The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) calls upon the respective State and Federal governments to recognise the prevalence and risks of Islamophobia and take action against it. ANIC will also continue to support the local community in Townsville. You may contact ANIC’s Spokesperson, Bilal Rauf in relation to this media statement on 1300 765 940 or [email protected]
