The CisternsThe old cisterns deep under the green lawns of the parkland of Søndermark-en offer a subterranean world of damp darkness reminiscent of crumbling ca-thedrals and sombre catacombs. Sounds reverberate with a 17-second delay through the cisterns where brittle stalactites hang precariously from the vaulted ceilings. Called Cisternerne, this underworld location is used for truly unique events as well as artistic total-experiences that draw on the specific design and climate of the location. Not least when, each year, a prominent artist is invited to stage an exhibition in these underground chambers.Søndermarken cisternerne.dk

19 20BakkehusetBakkehuset is a living story about the Danish Golden Age. Experience Kamma and Knud Lyne Rahbek’s authentic home from the early 1800s when it was a gathering place for contemporary cultural and literary circles, including such leading personalities as Hans Christian Andersen, Adam Oehlenschläger, J. L. Heiberg and Hans Christian Ørsted. Stroll through the romantic Bakkehuset garden and visit the octagonal conservatory where delicate Danish smørrebrød, cakes, wine, schnapps, coffee and teas are served during summer months.Rahbeks Allé 23bakkehusmuseet.dk

Frederiksberg GardenFrederiksberg Palace Garden is one of the Danish capital’s largest and most splendid parklands and a favoured sanctuary for the locals. By the main entrance at the end of Frederiks-berg Allé, the statue of King Frederik VI welcomes you to the more than 300-year-old garden, currently styled in the romantic English tradition with winding paths, waterways and mag-nificent trees dating from around 1800. There are several old orna-mental follies in the garden, including the Chinese Pavilion from 1799. The garden offers views to the elephants in the zoo, and you can enjoy summer boating in the waterways surrounded by peacocks and herons. Every year on Midsummer’s Eve (23 June), thou-sands of people flock to the gardens for communal sing-alongs, speeches, music and a traditional bonfire by the palace lake.

The Rose GardenA beautifully landscaped rose garden shielded from the city’s traffic and noise. Accessible from Allégade op-posite Frederik VI’s Allé.

The Royal Danish Garden SocietyThe garden of the Royal Danish Gar-den Society was established in 1884. With its winding pathways and abun-dant flowers, shrubs and trees, this old garden is a true urban gem. Here you find the magnificent Brøndsal, a facility used for exhibi-tions and concerts. Opening hours: There is access to the garden every day from sunrise to sunset. Adjacent to the gardens (in Pile Allé) there is a large maze. Designed with beautiful beech hedges, the maze is shaped like the label of a Tuborg beer bottle.kglhaveselskab.dk

Landbohøjskolens Have The garden was created in 1858 as part of the Royal Veterinary and Ag-ricultural University. Today, the bo-tanical garden belongs to the Fred-eriksberg Campus of the University of Copenhagen Faculty of Life Sciences. Landscaped in the romantic style, the garden offers an abundance of flow-ers, exotic trees and medicinal herbs. Café Væksthuset in the garden is a fa-voured spot, not least among the local students. The garden is open every day year-round from sunrise to sunset.Bülowsvej 17-19 plen.ku.dk/om/pfv/haven/omha-ven

SøndermarkenSøndermarken was landscaped simul-taneously with Frederiksberg Garden. The two parks are separated by a road, Roskildevej, but together they constitute one of Northern Europe’s largest urban parklands. Søndermark-en houses Copenhagen’s former cis-terns, which have been transformed into an underground exhibition ven-ue, Cisternerne. The park also fea-tures a 2.5 km interactive exercise route as well as outdoor exercise equipment. Free access 24/7.

Emma Falck, 17 years of ageGo to Værnedamsvej, which borders Vesterbro. It’s a young environment and really charming. I’d visit the winebar Falernum or Café Viggo. Window shopping along Gammel Kongevej is also a must-do. Here, I would go to Henckell where you can sit and enjoy a coffee outside and watch the world go by. For an evening out on the town, I’d head to Vinstuen on Falkonér Allé which is a relaxed and good place.

Birgitte Johansen, 37 years of ageI would head to Smallegade, where there is a good selection of wine merchants, and I’d walk out with a chilled bottle of rosé under my arm. At Café Sok-kelund I’d order their awesome cheesecake to be enjoyed with my rosé on a blanket in Frederiksberg

Garden. We would while away the afternoon looking forward to a dinner with delicious light dishes and good

wine at Promenaden on Frederiksberg Allé.

Hanne Birgitte Nørballe, 65 years of ageI’d visit Cisternerne, a truly unique and special place un-like anywhere else in the world. Then I’d head to the beautiful Frederiksberg Allé and enjoy a homemade ice-cream at Frederiksberg Chokolade - the city’s best ice-cream parlour. Finish the day at Berlin Bar on Gammel Kongevej. There’s a large selection of beers and a good atmosphere where you can chat with the locals.

Katharina Rye Jensen, 40 years of ageI would take a walk in Frederiksberg Garden and enjoy

the views from a bench by Frederiksberg Palace. Per-haps you’ll meet one of the garden’s five white pea-cocks. I would end the trip in Smallegade with an ice cream, or maybe I’d grab a beer at café Svejk. On a Saturday, I would definitely check out the flea market

behind City Hall for a few recycled treasures. I’d end the day with a perfect dinner at Café Sokkelund.

Mogens Solgaard, 65 years of ageLandbohøjskolens Have is for me one of Frederiks-berg’s secret hideouts. Here it’s usually quite peace-ful. This is where we bring guests to show them a city oasis. We also often pass by here on our own walks. The park is beautiful and in the summer there are enjoyable jazz brunches at the greenhouses, where you sit almost in the middle of the floral blooms. The location near the Green Path makes it easy to reach for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Louise Werner, 37 and Freja 5 years of age We often go to Landbohøjskolens Have to play by the small creek, feed the ducks and enjoy the many dif-ferent flowers and plants all year round. It’s an oasis of tranquillity. The playground in Aksel Møllers Have is also a hit with us. We buy a juice in the swimming

centre café or maybe go to the ParadIs ice-cream par-lour on Godthåbsvej right next door.

Attractions

Frederiksberg PalaceFrederiksberg Palace was construct-ed in 1699-1735 and served until the mid-1800s as the summer residence of the Danish Royal Family. Since 1869, the palace has been the seat of the Royal Danish Military Academy. The palace and its chapel with im-pressive stucco offers the chance to experience ceiling frescos, an elegant marble bathroom with a secret access staircase and the princesses’ pancake kitchen. The palace is also the venue of concerts, operas and exhibitions. Public tours are offered on the last Saturday of each month. For further information visit frederiksberg-slot-frbslot.dk

Frederiksberg Flea MarketThe traditional flea market is held behind Frederiksberg City Hall every Saturday from 9:00-15:00 between mid-April and mid-October. Here, locals sell their second-hand clothes, household items and furniture from a total of 93 market stalls. Antiques are few and far between, but you’ll definitely come across a few retro designs. You also won’t go hungry or thirsty. There are beer tents and food stalls. And if the market is packed with visitors you can simply head to the ad-jacent street Smallegade for plentiful supplies - or you can relax by the duck pond behind the flea market.

Copenhagen ZooOne of the city’s main attractions is Copenhagen Zoo with 1.2 million annual visitors. The zoo’s 4,200 ani-mals represent 240 species. In recent years, spectacular habitats have been added, most recently the Arctic Cir-cle with its playful polar bears. The elephants also have a new home and outdoor habitat designed by Lord Norman Foster. There are also large savannah habitats for zebras, giraffes and rhinos, which can be experienced from above on a footbridge - and you can watch underwater hippos. You can also visit a pet’s corner, a tropi-cal dome and the zoo tower with the city’s best views.zoo.dk

The Beer GardensBack in the 1850s, these three small gardens were originally places where families could relax and eat their pic-nics. Today, the enjoyable gardens are small timeless restaurants with tradi-tional chequered tablecloths and gar-den string lights. Naturally, they serve classic Danish open-faced sandwich-es - smørrebrød - as well as hearty fare. Weather permitting, these are authentic places to enjoy Danish fa-vourites.Hansens Gamle Familiehave Open all year 11:00-24:00 Pile Allé 10-12. hansenshave.dkM.G. With its theatres and cafés, the area around Frederiksberg Allé has its very own charm. Many concerts and musicals are staged in Frederiksberg. Major events take place in Forum Co-penhagen, and from 2018 also in the reborn KB-Hallen. Classical concerts, often free of charge, are staged at the concert hall of the Royal Danish Acad-emy of Music.
