2 AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / AUGUST 2008

A. J. “Al” AmatuzioPresident and CEO, AMSOIL INC.

Our 35th Anniversary Convention is now in the books, and all the feedback I’ve received from those Dealerswho attended has been overwhelmingly positive. Anincredible amount of preparation went into the pro-duction, and by all accounts it was well worth theeffort. Dealers were treated to a nice balance of productnews, technical detail, sales information and enter-tainment. I am extremely proud of our corporate stafffor pulling off an event of this magnitude, and there isno question in my mind that the Dealers appreciatedall of their hard work too.

Among the highlights of the event was the intro-duction of our Dominator Racing Oils, which you willsee featured on pages eight and nine of this issue of yourAction News. True to AMSOIL tradition, these oils offersuperior performance when compared to other raceoils, and their versatility extends well beyond theiron-track applications. These high zinc/high phospho-rus formulations are ideal for the hot rod, tuner andother high performance markets as well. They areunique in the racing oil world. While other oil com-panies limit their true racing oil formulations to cor-porately sponsored teams, we make ours available toeveryone. In other words, the oils run by our corporaterace teams are the same oils available to your customers.

Speaking of racers, the Convention kicked off withan exhilarating introduction of our corporately spon-sored teams. Scott Douglas, Mike Oberg, Bob Teague,Terry Rinker and the full stable of AMSOIL racers tookthe stage during an extremely high-energy laser light

show. We were also honored by a visit from a long-timefriend of ours. Supercross legend Mike LaRocco wason hand to express his appreciation for the long-stand-ing sponsorship he had through us. Mike signed auto-graphs, spoke with our Dealers and confirmed theimportance of establishing loyal relationships withthose whom we invest our sponsorship dollars.

Another highlight of the show was the repeat editionof our Wheel and Deal game. Modeled after the origi-nal Wheel and Deal from our 30th AnniversaryConvention, we drew the names of 10 Dealers from theaudience to join us on stage. Each Dealer then negoti-ated to the best of his or her ability the chance to walkaway with a little extra AMSOIL money. Needless to say,the Dealers took me for some cash, which, by the way,was a lot of fun for me.

Beyond the entertainment, some serious informa-tion was delivered. Our executive vice presidents AlanAmatuzio and Dean Alexander addressed our DirectJobbers on a subject that continues to affect us all verydirectly. A summary of their presentation, “State ofthe Lubricants Industry,” appears on pages 14 through17 in this issue.

Essentially, as noted by Alan and Dean, as the priceof crude oil continues to fluctuate, all aspects of oureconomy continue to be affected, including the finishedlubricant market. Many variables come into play. First, because the production of synthetic base stocks andadditives have some basis in crude oil, our costs arebeing affected. Key components derived from crudeoil, including butane, ethylene, propylene and ben-zene, are used to produce base oils, and as the cost ofthese components skyrockets, so too does cost of pro-duction. As you will read, our base oil costs have risenby 47 percent in the past 12 months. On the additiveside, in the past six months alone, we have seen a 24percent increase in diesel oil additives, a 27 percentincrease in two-cycle oil additives and a 25 percentincrease in gasoline oil additives.

Our packaging and freight costs have risen dramat-ically too. Plastic packaging, including quart bottles, gal-lons, pails and twin packs, has risen in cost by over 14percent in the past 12 months. Plastic cap costs haverisen by 21 percent during that same time period. Inregard to freight, we paid a fuel surcharge of 35 cents permile 12 months ago, and today we pay 71 cents permile, over and above the actual freight rate.

Alan and Dean detailed several additional variables, each contributing to the current volatility. Supply anddemand issues, environmental objectives and politicalinstability are all playing a role.

I mention all this not as justification for the priceadjustments we’ve been forced to make. I mention itbecause the summary provides an excellent overview ofthe current state of affairs within the industry youwork. Please read it. The more educated you are, themore value you bring to your customers and the moresuccessful you will be.

AMSOIL, The First in Synthetics, officially came to be in1972 when Lt. Col. A. J. Amatuzio brought to market thefirst synthetic motor oil to satisfy API certification stan-dards. In July 1973, Amatuzio introduced the MLMmarketing plan, providing a solid business opportunityto Dealers everywhere. Today, the company offers abroad product line and a grassroots presence in themarketplace that has changed the way people thinkabout changing oil.

On July 15-19, 2008, AMSOIL held its 35thAnniverary Convention in Duluth, Minn. More than 230Dealers took part in the Core Technology Training, anintense three-day educational training featuring a widearray of topics. The feedback coming out of the classeswas all positive, with Dealers citing how excited they areto apply the newly acquired knowledge to helping themgrow their businesses. Congratulations to all of thegraduates!

Following the Core Technology Training, all of the35th Anniversary participants came together to kickoff the Convention in an exciting way. Twenty-one cor-porately sponsored race teams were introduced duringa spectacular sound and light show, helping Dealers getpumped up for the future of AMSOIL in the racingworld. A few of the race teams were then featured inshort interviews on stage so Dealers could get an evenbetter understanding of the different programs andlearn about the exciting directions they are planning totake.

Following the opening ceremonies, participants were invited to participate in the AMSOIL Race Expo/RigRoundup. The Expo featured close to 30 of the AMSOILsponsored race teams, as well as various corporatepartners such as Donaldson, WIX, Injen, Mothers, NGK,TRICO and Twin Air. Dealers had a chance to minglewith racers including Terry and Randy Rinker, BobTeague, D.J. Eckstrom and Shaun Crapo, Scott Douglasand Mike Oberg, Mike LaRocco and more. They alsohad the opportunity to hear the inside scoop on what is

coming down the pike from some of the vendors there.Another highlight of the Convention was the new

products presentation presented by Alan Amatuzio.Amatuzio provided Dealers insight as to what they canexpect to see in coming weeks with regards to newproducts. The new Dominator Racing Oils wereunveiled, along with a few other high-quality productsthat are sure to increase Dealer sales.

Dealers also had the opportunity to hear inspiringsuccess stories and receive valuable tips as DeanAlexander interviewed a number of the company’s topDirect Jobbers.

Dealers were also excited to have the chance toparticipate in Wheel and Deal with Al Amatuzio – TheRevenge. Al, along with his sidekicks Alan Amatuzio,Dean Alexander and Kevin McBride, handed out thou-sands of dollars to participating Dealers. The eventcame to a ceremonial close with the President’s Dinneron Saturday night.

The event was a huge success and AMSOIL hopesto see everyone who participated achieving higherlevels of success in the months to come.

Reduces Friction, Heat, Wear and DepositsAMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil keeps engines running cool byeffectively reducing friction and heat, and it contains a heavy treatment of anti-wear additives to provide maximum wear protection over a broad operatingtemperature range (see graph). It is extremely resistant to volatility (seegraph), reducing oil consumption, oil thickening and deposit formation.

Provides Extreme Pressure Quality Protection for GearsBecause it is shear stable and does not thin out from mechanical activity,AMSOIL 10W-30 Motorcycle Oil also provides superior transmission pro-tection without the negative effects of extreme pressure additives, such aspoor wet clutch performance.

Delivers Superior Rust and Corrosion ProtectionMotorcycles are prone to rust from storage, humidity and short drivesthat can lead to uncontrolled wear, compression loss and blow-by. Unlikemany motorcycle oils, AMSOIL 10W-30 Motorcycle Oil contains special anti-rust agents that deliver superior rust protection, while its high TBN (seegraph) provides greater protection from acid corrosion and helps maintaininternal engine cleanliness.

Provides Excellent Wet Clutch PerformanceAMSOIL 10W-30 contains no friction modifiers and promotes smoothshifting and positive clutch engagement. It controls heat and preventsslippage and glazing, promoting longer clutch life.

Service LifeAMSOIL 10W-30 Advanced Synthetic Motorcycle Oil is recommended foruse up to twice the motorcycle manufacturer change interval (miles/hours)or one year, whichever comes first, in engines and transmissions. Whenusing an engine oil filter other than AMSOIL Ea, change the filter at stan-dard intervals.

For off-road use, change AMSOIL 10W-30 at motorcycle manufacturerintervals.

Racing or modified engines are excluded from extended drain interval recommendations. Oil changes are at the owner's discretion.

Motorcycle applications place greater and more diverse demands on lubricants than automobiles, and conventional motor oil chemistries typically fall short of providing an ade-quate level of protection. The introduction of the reformulated AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40and 20W-50 Motorcycle Oils in 2005 addressed the special needs of motorcycles head-on,providing maximum protection and performance and effectively extending equipment life.

As fuel economy has become increasingly important in today’s world of record gasprices, more equipment manufacturers have begun recommending lighter viscosity SAE30 oils. In order to meet this new demand, AMSOIL is introducing its new 10W-30Advanced Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (MCT). Formulated with the same proven technologyas 10W-40 and 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oils, it provides maximum protection andfuel economy for motorcycle, scooter, ATV and UTV engines specifying an SAE 30 or 10W-30 viscosity, as well as transmissions specifying an SAE 80, API GL-1 gear lubricant.

AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / AUGUST 2008 11

The high price of fuel is a major area of concern forpeople and businesses. As prices continue to rise andset record highs, fuel economy has become increas-ingly important for customers everywhere, and peopleare doing everything they can to stretch their fueldollars. Auto dealerships have targeted fuel efficiencyas a significant selling point. Many are having difficultykeeping fuel efficient hybrid models in stock, while fuelinefficient truck and SUV sales have slumped.

Unfortunately, as fuel prices have soared, so hasthe proliferation of questionable products that toutimproved fuel economy benefits but cannot live up totheir marketing hype. Government agencies such asthe Federal Trade Commission have been busy seek-ing out and punishing some of the worst offenders.

AMSOIL P.i. Performance Improver, on the otherhand, offers proven performance. It increases fueleconomy, reduces emissions and restores vehiclepower and performance by dissolving and removingcombustion chamber, intake valve and fuel injectordeposits. In fact, field testing shows AMSOIL P.i.provides an average fuel economy improvement of 2.3percent and up to 5.7 percent (see graph).

Because of this substantiation, as well as the com-pany’s confidence in the performance benefits ofP.i., AMSOIL is offering a money-back guarantee onthe product’s fuel economy benefits. If a customerdoes not see fuel economy improvement in his or hervehicle after first-time use of P.i., AMSOIL will refundthe purchase price of the product.

The P.i. money-back guarantee offer is goodthrough December 31, 2008 and is open to everyone, including Dealers, Preferred Customers, retail cus-tomers, catalog customers, commercial and retailaccounts. Because the most dramatic fuel economy

improvement is achieved after first-time use of P.i. ina vehicle with accumulated deposits, the P.i. money-back guarantee is limited to vehicles with a minimumof 25,000 miles that have not previously been treatedwith P.i. and have not undergone any fuel system orfuel injector cleaning procedure. P.i. must be used witha full tank of gas, and the P.i.-treated gas must be rununtil the tank is near-empty before filling up again. Fueleconomy measurement will then be taken on the tank-ful of gas following the P.i.-treated tank of gas.

Because potential customers have nothing to lose, the P.i. money-back guarantee is an excellent oppor-tunity for Dealers to increase their sales of P.i. andother AMSOIL products. P.i. is an ideal door-opener.Once customers experience the benefits, they may beinterested in the benefits of other products in theAMSOIL line.

ProcessCustomers are eligible for the refund if they do not seea fuel economy improvement following use of thesubsequent tank of gas after P.i. treatment. If a cus-tomer has not received a fuel economy benefit andwishes to take advantage of the money-back guar-antee, he or she may simply download and print therebate form from the AMSOIL Corporate Website atwww.amsoil.com. The form contains complete qual-ification details and must becompletely filled out and mailedwith the P.i. purchase receipt tothe following address:

percent of California drivers change motor oil moreoften than their vehicle’s manufacturer recommends, theCalifornia Environmental Protection Agency and itsIntegrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) haveemerged as another strong opponent of the 3,000-mileoil change. The group recently launched a public infor-mation program and website (www.3000milemyth.org)designed to “bust the 3,000-mile myth” and encouragedrivers to reduce used oil volume by following the longeroil drain recommendations of vehicle manufacturers.

“Used motor oil poses a great risk to the environ-ment,” said CIWMB Chair Margo Reid Brown. “Withbetter made cars and the rise of synthetic oils, the3,000-mile standard is not always recommended.”

Most recently, General Motors announced its supportof the CIWMB program to educate drivers about oilchange intervals. According to GM, standard 3,000-mile oil change recommendations are based on out-dated engine and oil technology, and the companyinstead recommends changing oil based on its Oil LifeSystem. Currently included on over 97 percent of all GMvehicles sold in the U.S., the GM Oil Life System typi-cally allows drivers to extend drain intervals up to 10,000miles through use of a computer-based software algo-rhythm that measures vehicle operating conditions. With 31 million vehicles on the road equipped with theOil Life System, GM spokesman Tom Henderson claimsfollowing its recommendations rather than the 3,000-milerule could save 100 million gallons of oil annually.

In addition to the environmental benefits associatedwith less waste oil, extended drain intervals save con-sumers money. For example, customers who purchaseconventional oil at $3 or more per quart, drive 12,000miles per year and follow 3,000-mile oil change rec-ommendations spend at least $60 per year on oil alone(assuming a five-quart sump capacity). AMSOIL Dealersand Preferred Customers who pay $6.45 per quart(based on case pricing) under the same conditions payonly $32.25 per year.

“When it comes to oil changes, less is more,” claimsthe CIWMB. “You’ll have more money in your wallet bychanging your oil less, and fewer oil changes meanless oil that needs to be safely managed and recycled.”

Premium AMSOIL synthetic motor oils offer thelongest drain intervals on the market, unsurpassed pro-tection and performance that effectively extends equip-ment life and improved fuel economy, saving customersmoney at the pump and reducing the nation’s depen-dence on foreign oil.

The standard 3,000-mile oil change interval is underattack. Promoted for years by most motor oil companiesand quick lube businesses as an essential part of propervehicle maintenance, the public has become muchmore skeptical in recent years. In fact, searches for“3,000 mile oil change” in top Internet search enginessuch as Google and Yahoo! primarily yield articles andblog postings that challenge the practice and refer to itas a “scam” or “myth.”

AMSOIL synthetic motor oil was introduced in 1972as the only motor oil on the market recommended for25,000-mile/one year drain intervals, and the companyhas spent much of the last 36 years as the lone voicepromoting the benefits of extended drain intervals. However, AMSOIL has recently welcomed an increas-ing number of companies and organizations to theparty. Although they still don’t recommend drain inter-vals as long as AMSOIL recommendations, the momen-tum is growing.

Vehicle manufacturers have mostly recommendedoil change intervals exceeding 3,000 miles in recentyears. In fact, most recommend intervals of 5,000 milesor more. Ford Motor Company recommends drain inter-vals of 7,500 miles in its model year 2007 and newervehicles, while other manufacturers incorporate oil mon-itoring systems in their newer vehicles that allowmotorists to extend drain intervals even further.

In its December 2006 issue, Consumer Reportsencourages drivers to follow the longer oil change rec-ommendations of vehicle manufacturers, saying,“Although oil companies and quick-lube shops like topromote this idea [that engine oil should be changedevery 3,000 miles], it's usually not necessary. Go by therecommended oil-change schedule in your vehicle'sowner's manual. Most vehicles driven under normalconditions can go 7,500 miles or more between oilchanges. Some models now come with a monitoringsystem that alerts the driver when the oil needs chang-ing. Depending on driving conditions, these can extendchange intervals to 10,000 or 15,000 miles.”

Steve Ritter, senior editor of Chemical & EngineeringNews, writes, “Conventional wisdom has held that theoil should be changed about every 3,000 miles. Thisnotion has been ingrained into people's heads fordecades, in part as a marketing ploy by oil companies. The 3,000-mile interval made sense when engines usedsingle-grade nondetergent oils. But with the latest oilsand car designs, it's no longer necessary to change oilthat often under normal driving conditions.”

14 AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / AUGUST 2008

When people think of the oil industry, the first thingthat usually comes to mind is the cost of fuel. When oiland fuel cost more, everything costs more. It’s not justat the pump; groceries cost more, deliveries cost moreand of course, motor oil costs more. While AMSOIL pro-duces only synthetic lubricants, the company is stillhit hard by high oil prices.

An example of how shock waves from current marketvolatility will be felt lies in the auto industry. Up to now, automakers have protected themselves from marketfluctuations by locking into long-term contracts withsteel producers. That’s why the large increases in steelprices haven’t driven up the costs of new vehicles. Butthose contracts are starting to run out. The same sortof scenario is playing out with every other commodity.Copper, zinc, aluminum, platinum, magnesium andplastic are all skyrocketing in price. According to Ward’sAutomotive, in the near future a $20,000 vehicle will bea $30,000 vehicle, a $30,000 vehicle will be a $40,000vehicle and so on.

Raw MaterialsIngredients of synthetic lubes, additives and basestocks, even synthetic base stocks, have some basis incrude oil and natural gas. The unprecedented increasein crude oil over the past year is driving the costs of keychemicals up sharply and often. Butane, ethylene, propylene, benzene and other chemicals used to pro-duce base oils have all skyrocketed in price. Over thepast 12 months, the price of base oils used in the pro-

duction of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants has risen by 47percent. Additives have been greatly affected as well.Diesel oil additives are up 24 percent, two-stroke oiladditives are up 27 percent and gasoline engine oiladditives are up 25 percent, all in the past six months. The price increases from AMSOIL chemical and rawmaterial suppliers are issued so frequently and withsuch significant impact that it’s almost impossible tomaintain sufficient pricing levels. And more priceincreases are in the pipeline.

PackagingThe price of plastic has risen dramatically due to theincreased price of crude oil, and AMSOIL is greatlyaffected. Plastic packaging, including quarts, gallons, pails and twin packs, has risen in price by over 14 per-cent in the past 12 months, and plastic cap prices haverisen 21 percent in the past 12 months. In addition, steel drums have risen in price by 39.5 percent in thepast six months alone.

FreightFreight companies commonly use fuel surcharges tocope with fluctuations in the price of fuel. Twelve monthsago, AMSOIL paid a fuel surcharge of $0.35 per mile.Currently, the company pays $0.71 per mile, and haspaid as much as $0.81 per mile. Fuel surcharges are inaddition to regular freight rates, and current fuel sur-charges nearly double the cost of shipping. Additionally, fuel surcharges apply to everything coming in and goingout, so AMSOIL pays a fuel surcharge and freight on

cement applications, and has the ability to store electricalenergy. Lithium carbonate is an important component inbatteries for mobile phones, laptops, camcorders, cam-eras and electric and hybrid cars. With the popularity ofportable electronic devices, and environmental con-cerns increasing demand for electric and hybrid cars tounprecedented levels, demand for lithium is increasingand will continue to increase. For example, Toyota plansto offer only hybrid vehicles by 2020.

Political instability around the globe, rampant spec-ulation, restricted access to new sources, lack of invest-ment in new production and a weak U.S. dollar aremajor issues affecting the current state of volatility. These issues are outside even the U.S. government’scontrol and all have some impact on the lubricantsindustry by affecting prices.

Current TrendsVehicle manufacturers are under pressure to providemore efficient cars and trucks. As a result, many havebegun recommending lower-viscosity motor oils as away of improving fuel efficiency.

As environmental concerns continue driving trendstoward fuel efficiency and reduced waste, qualitybecomes more important. As a result, top-tier, high-mileage and synthetic oils now account for almost 20percent of the North American personal car motor oil(PCMO) market and continue to gain ground.

Heavy-duty diesel applications are facing many of thesame trends. Higher value, biofuels compatibility, extended drain capability and fuel economy are hottopics among heavy-duty diesel owners. In addition, theEPA recently acknowledged that lubricants in generalcan deliver a 1-2 percent improvement in fuel economy, increasing the trend toward quality oils.

packaging as it comes in and again when it is shippedout as finished product.

Supply & DemandWhile demand for finished lubricants continues to rise, supply has remained tight. China, India, South Africa andother densely-populated countries are using more oil allthe time. In addition, competition for many of the chem-icals used to produce lubricants continues to increase. For example, the demand for biofuels has dramaticallyincreased the demand for the crops used in their pro-duction, which has in turn increased the demand for fer-tilizer. Many chemical fertilizers are formulated with rawmaterials derived from the same chemicals used to pro-duce additives, further depleting supplies.

Lithium is another common ingredient necessary togrease production that is being used up quickly byother industries. Lithium is a silver-white, soft alkalimetal that, under normal conditions, is the lightestmetal and least dense solid element. Lithium hydroxide,a lithium derivative, is primarily used in the greaseindustry, with demand growing at a steady 2 percent peryear over the last 20 years. Lithium-based greases arepopular in automotive, industrial, military, aircraft andmarine applications. Lithium is also used in glass and

According to Jobber’s World figures obtained fromleading auto parts chain stores in December 2005 andMay 2008, competitive motor oil quart pricing hasincreased at an equal or greater percentage over thattime period compared to AMSOIL synthetic motor oil aswell (see July Action News).

Additional ChallengesAs an independent oil company, AMSOIL faces manyunique challenges. The volatility of the current marketimpacts independent manufacturers differently than itdoes “Big Oil.” Recently, the Independent LubricantManufacturers Association (ILMA) submitted commentsto the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) renewing its crit-icism of the pricing practices of major oil companies.ILMA’s biggest complaint lies with the majors’ practiceof issuing a price increase for base oils to all of theircompetitors and delaying the subsequent price increaseon their finished lubricants. Independent blenders, likeAMSOIL, buy base oils from the majors and competeagainst them in the sale of finished goods.

In some cases, ILMA contends, the same suppliersthat implement numerous base oil price increases toindependents delay increasing prices on their finishedproducts for 45 to 60 days, causing a price squeeze onindependent lubricant manufacturers. For example,Shell announced a price increase on finished lubesMay 23 that doesn’t go into effect until August 5.

ILMA General Counsel Jeff Leiter said the only con-clusion that can be reached is that the major oil com-panies are trying to squeeze out the independents for

16 AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / AUGUST 2008

Future TrendsEnvironmental concerns look to be the driving forcebehind future lubricant trends. Improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, maximum engine cleanliness, improved durability and extended oil drain intervals willbe the targets for future oil formulations. But environ-mental issues are far from the only factor to considerwhen planning future lube formulations. As noted inthe chart above, the lubricant industry is a complicatedbusiness.

The CompetitionAll motor oil companies have been greatly affected bytoday’s volatile market. As the following chart illus-trates, other companies raised prices to their distribu-tors an average of 24 percent since March 2008.AMSOIL has just issued a 12-16 percent price increaseeffective August 1 and only had a 5 percent surchargeprior to that.

market share. “ExxonMobil might say ‘Shell’s our com-petition, not ILMA members,’ but it’s kind of curious thatExxonMobil is selling base oil to Shell. Exxon raisesprices, and the rest of them follow suit the next day bythe same amount. Our sense is, we’ve lost a competi-tive market for base oils, and that’s what is creating theproblem,” said Leiter. Price increases from base oilsuppliers used to be approximately $0.05 per gallon. Now they are more like $0.30 per gallon each increase.

AMSOIL AdvantageAt a glance, the current state of the lubricant industrymight appear rather gloomy, but not for AMSOILDealers. AMSOIL synthetic lubricants already addressmany of the forecasted issues of the future (extendeddrains, fuel economy, environmental concerns). • AMSOIL customers are quality-conscious, and

AMSOIL is the benchmark for quality lubrication. • AMSOIL offers a complete line of products, making

the local AMSOIL Dealer a one-stop shop for auto-motive needs.

• AMSOIL synthetic lubricants provide maximum fueleconomy and can improve mileage by up to 2 to 5percent.

• AMSOIL synthetic lubricants offer unsurpassed pro-tection from wear.

• The extended drain capabilities of AMSOIL syntheticlubricants set them in a league of their own. OnlyAMSOIL has formulated lubricants designed for

extended drain intervals for more than 35 years, andonly AMSOIL provides oils capable of 25,000 miles orone year of service.

• AMSOIL lubricants offer many environmental benefits.Reduced volatility provides fewer emissions, whileextended drain intervals reduce the amount of usedoil generated.

• AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are made in the U.S.A.Their ability to provide maximum protection overextended drain intervals significantly reducesAmerica’s dependence on foreign oil.

• AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are more cost-effective.While the initial investment is slightly more than thatof competing oils, AMSOIL products save moneylong-term.

• AMSOIL Dealers are lubrication experts. Nothinglends to credibility better than the demonstration ofknowledge and the willingness to help. Honest, accu-rate answers to customers’ lubrication questions willundoubtedly lead to more sales, and AMSOIL Dealersknow a great deal more about lubrication than nearlyanyone working the counter at a parts store.

Bottom LineAMSOIL Dealers are poised perfectly to address all of theissues facing the lubricant industry. They have the toolsto provide answers to the problems consumers face. AndAMSOIL will not sacrifice quality.

The parking lot of the AMSOIL Center looked muchlike a museum display of cars on June 18, 2008 as theAMSOIL-sponsored 2008 PPG Street Rodder RoadTour pulled into town. The group of over 22 vehiclesmade its way to Superior, Wis. from Bowling Green, Ky.en route to the Minnesota Street Rod Association’sBack to the Fifties event in St. Paul, Minn.

In 2007, AMSOIL became officially involved with thestreet rod scene by becoming the Exclusive Official Oil

of the National Street Rod Association (NSRA), thoughmany street rodders knew the benefits of AMSOIL syn-thetic lubricants before that relationship was estab-lished. “The NSRA is just one of many organized groupsof enthusiasts, with more than 55,000 members and amonthly magazine called Street Scene (in whichAMSOIL has a monthly column),” said AMSOILAdvertising Director Ed Newman. “It’s a lifestyle, andthey are passionate about their cars.”

This year AMSOIL deepened its relationship withclassic car enthusiasts by sponsoring the Street RodderRoad Tour. Street Rodder magazine builds a unique careach year that leads other enthusiasts on a series ofroad tours under the direction of Road Tour DirectorJerry Dixey. “The Road Tour made AMSOIL one of itsstops on the way to the ever-popular Back to the Fiftiesevent in St. Paul,” said Newman. “Local car clubs wereinvited, which resulted in a fantastic array of cars gath-ering on the back apron of the AMSOIL Center parkinglot. It was a spectacle.”

The passion of street rod enthusiasts was palpableat the event in Superior as more than 400 local carowners brought their vehicles to show off to the crowd– vehicles ranging from a 1927 Model T to muscle cars, rat rods and everything in between. There was a lot tosee, great information and tips were shared and theunderlying theme of it all was an outstanding product –AMSOIL.

Another highlight of the evening was the presence ofJo Coddington, wife of the late Boyd Coddington, oneof street rodding’s most influential builders and cen-terpiece of the popular TV show American Hot Rod.Coddington flew in to drive with Dixey in the lead car to

St. Paul, where the AMSOIL “Salt Fever” Roadster wasdisplayed at Back to the Fifties.

“This [the street rod] is a great market for AMSOILDealers because all of these people have more than onecar, and they are passionate about them all,” saidNewman. “According to one survey, the average StreetRodder magazine reader has seven cars.” The evi-dence for this was clear at the event in June, andAMSOIL is proud to have a strong presence in thisexciting market. Camp Pendleton plays host to some of the world’s toughest men, the UnitedStates Marines. In June, the base saw another version of tough as mem-bers of the Championship Off Road Racing (CORR) series set up camp topromote the short course series and thank the men and women of thearmed services.

The visit was part of a vigorous promotional tour by CORR officials topromote the July 25-26 Chula Vista (Calif.) event, as well as the series’ highlevel of exposure on NBC and the SPEED Channel. CORR showed off itscolors to the 1st Marine Division and heard stories from the soldiers sta-tioned at Camp Pendleton.

The Marine visit was just one of many stops for CORR in 2008 as it con-tinues to promote short course off-road racing. The series has also broughtdisplays to AMA Supercross and Motocross races, Monster Jams anddozens of local events.

Dealers are encouraged to host AMSOIL/CORR parties either at their homes or local businesses during the tele-casts of the CORR races. Dealers who host CORR parties will be eligible to win a free trip to the final CORR raceof the year December 6-7 in Chula Vista, Calif. The lucky winning Dealer will gain access to an AMSOIL VIP suite,as well as the pits and trailer staging areas. AMSOIL will also provide two round trip air tickets and three nights oflodging. Dealers can register for the contest by filling out their party details on the new online form located in theDealer Zone. Click on the “Online Forms” tab, click on “Race Events,” then click on “Win a Trip to One of the FinalCORR Races of the Season!” The next televised race is a live event from Pomona, Calif. on August 16, 5-7 p.m. EDTon the SPEED Channel.

Products the Pros UseDuring a recent team trip from California to Florida, Team AMSOIL offshore racer Bob Teague ran an independent test of AMSOILDiesel Concentrate (ADF). The AMSOIL offshore race boat is towed by acustom Freightliner coach powered with a Cat C-12 pumped up to 500 horse-power. A long term test through various driving conditions (with Teague as theonly driver) revealed an average fuel efficiency of 6.21 mpg. During the last2,000 miles of the Florida trip, Diesel Concentrate was added to the fuel at arate of 16 ounces per 80 gallons of fuel. After the next fill-up, the fuel mileageobserved over similar driving conditions and speeds improved to over 7.3 mpg. This increase in efficiency helps the team offset the soaring costs of diesel fuel.

Rinker spins out during qualifyingat the Bay City, Mich. event.

Rinker Successful in Return to Bay CityTeam AMSOIL lands on podium in ChampBoat Series

CORR Continues Push Forward Off-track marketing helping growth of sport

Even though it’s been two years since Terry Rinker’s perfect season, the AMSOILpowerboat driver from Tampa, Fla. still has a big target on his back as seen from therest of the ChampBoat Series teams.

In mid-June, Rinker was looking for his first win of the season at the second roundof the series in Bay City, Mich. Despite a gnarly, near-roll-over during Saturday’s qual-ifying, Rinker was able to grab hold of the second starting spot for Sunday’s 50-lapfinal. In the final, Rinker not only battled the constant waves, but also had to fightthrough some unforgiving lapped traffic in his quest to catch Shaun Torrente.Despite consistent pressure, Rinker fell just short of his first win, earning a strongsecond place podium finish.

“We did everything we could to make the pass at the end and I felt with a few morelaps we would have been on the top step for the fourth time here, but we just ran outof time,” said Rinker. “It was a great race and I want to thank AMSOIL for their con-tinued support of our race teams and the ChampBoat Series.”

Terry’s brother, Randy Rinker, drove his AMSOIL #41 boat to his best finish in theseries with a fourth.

CORR officials stopped at Camp Pendleton inSouthern California to promote the series andshow appreciation for the armed services.

22 AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / AUGUST 2008

PRICE ADJUSTMENT EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1Adjusted prices for AMSOIL products are effectiveAugust 1, and the monthly surcharge program is elim-inated at this time. The new pricing for all programs isavailable in the Dealer Zone. Printed price lists and anelectronic G100 price update that can be printed andenclosed with existing G100 catalogs will be availableby mid-August.

Rising crude oil and raw material prices affect everylubricant company in the industry, and each has beenforced to increase prices and implement energy sur-charges to compensate. Keeping price increases to anabsolute minimum is a top priority at AMSOIL. Whenforced to increase prices or implement an energy sur-charge, the company’s only goal is to recover itsincreased production costs. In fact, Jobbers World fig-ures cited in the July Action News indicate that com-petitive motor oil brands have been increasing in priceat an equal or greater percentage than AMSOIL syntheticmotor oils. Even with a minimal price adjustment,AMSOIL synthetic lubricants remain the best and mostcost-effective choice on the market, saving customersmoney through extended drain intervals, reduced wearand maintenance and increased fuel efficiency.

HOLIDAY CLOSINGSThe Toronto Distribution Center will be closed Monday,August 4 for Simcoe Day. The AMSOIL corporate head-quarters, U.S. distribution centers and Canadian dis-tribution centers will be closed Monday, September 1for Labor Day.

NEW AMSOIL P.I.: A STUDY IN PERFORMANCEBROCHUREThe new G2543 AMSOIL P.i.: A Study in Performancebrochure provides an in-depth look at the functions offuel injectors, intake valves andcombustion chambers; the nega-tive effects that deposits have onthese fuel system componentsand the superior clean-up bene-fits provided by AMSOIL P.i.Performance Improver. Fullsize/color, 8 pages.

AMSOIL GREEN TIP FOR DEALERSIn recent years, a lot of attention and media coveragehave been focused on vehicle emissions and the neg-ative effects those emissions have on the environmentand people’s health. Many states conduct mandatoryvehicle emission inspection tests in areas that do notmeet federal air quality standards. AMSOIL P.i.Performance Improver effectively reduces emissionsand helps vehicles pass emission tests, reducing pol-lution and improving air quality. In fact, P.i. provides upto a 15 percent reduction in hydrocarbon (HC) emis-sions, up to a 26 percent reduction in carbon monox-ide (CO) emissions and up to a 17 percent reduction innitrous oxide (NOx) emissions.
