Volksgemeinschaft
Literally ‘people’s community’
Key goal of Nazism; to create a national community based on race without class or religious divide
The idea aimed to bring together ethnic ‘Aryan’ Germans and to encourage to promote working together for the sake of the state.
Winterhilfswerk and Eintopf Winterhilfswerk was a winter relief scheme for the
unemployed which Hitler called a “great campaign against hunger and cold”
Tool to promote Volksgemeinschaft as Germans were helping other needier Germans
9 million receiving payments in 1938
State urged people to eat one simple pot meal (Eintopf) on one Sunday every month and to donate money to charity as a ‘sacrifice to the Reich’
Showed solidarity with poorer Germans and so enforced idea of Germany being one united nation.
Heil Hitler Salute
‘Heil Hitler’ was a salute to glorify Hitler and the German nation
Compulsory for civilians after 1933 but optional for the army
Jews and inmates were banned from using the salute after 1937
Social ritual to strengthen the individual’s identity with the regime
