Why theCanary Islands?

The Canary Islands offer unique attractions that are recognised around the world. A trip to the Canaries means good weather, sea, relaxation and much more. The islands are always brimming with special and intense experiences. The trouble is, exploring the Canaries takes a lot of time and

travelling... or maybe not.

Pullmantur is launching its new ‘Canary Islands’ itinerary, a new route that will be added to our offer for the winter 2016 – 2017 season.

This itinerary includes seven nights on board the Horizon cruise ship and has three embarkation ports: Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz in Tenerife and Lanzarote. As well as visiting these islands, you

will also explore La Palma and Fuerteventura, and stop off in colourful Marrakesh (Agadir).Dolphin and whale watching, camel rides, visits to the Maspalomas dunes, Teide, Timanfaya, and the

white sandy beaches of Fuerteventura... These are just some of the features of this itinerary, which has everything for those seeking a slice of summer during the winter months.

The gastronomy of the Canary Islands comprises traditional dishes from the archipelago and is an important aspect of the Canarian cultural identity. It is characterised by its simplicity, variety, and its wealth of ingredients, with each island boasting different recipes, a variety of foods from land and sea, and an eclectic flavour. The sauces, or “mojos”, are outstanding and usually accompany “papas arrugadas” (wrinkled potatoes) or meat. The quality of its wines, from the La Palma designation of origin, has been recognised with numerous prestigious awards in recent years. Another highlight are the goat’s cheeses, which also boast a designation of origin seal.

As for the stews, outstanding examples include the wheat stew and the “Garbanzas” chickpea stew, while other dishes include ribs and potatoes with pineapple, goat, and rabbit. The sea provides ingredients for excellent dishes such as “la vieja”. Other standout examples are “morenas” and “muriones” (types of moray eel), which are fried. Other dishes not to be missed are “chicharrones” (pork rinds), roasted cheese with mojo, and limpets in “salmorejo”. The “gofio” (roasted maize meal) also plays a prominent role in La Palma cuisine, either made into a dough (“amasado”) or a thick porridge (“escaldón”). It is a good accompaniment to meat and fish dishes.

FOOD, CULTURE,AND CARNIVAL

If the Canary Islands are world-renowned for something, it has to be the carnival.

This year, guests on board the Horizon will be able to join the party, which permeates every corner of these islands, and in particular the “Indianos” (Indians) carnival on the island of La Palma. On 27 February 2017, the day of the Indianos,the Horizon will be docked inLa Palma.
