May I wish all of you a Happy andProsperous New Year. Several thingshave transpired this last year in mylife. The first is I am officially a member of the unemployed and thereforesupposedly have an infinite amountof time on my hands to do all sorts ofthings I've never done before or tofinish up all those projects that I'vehad sitting on the shelf for years. I'vealways intended to write editorialsand henceforth this article for inclusion in the club newsletter.

The second was the opportunity I hadthis last year to take severalPhotoshop classes (at companyexpense before I retired) and hone myskills at digital photography. Thatallowed me to attack the large collection of family photos that have beensitting in shoeboxes for years, scanthem and restore them for use by mywife, Fran, to include in her numerous scrapbooks.

Thirdly, I had the pleasure of takingmy 84 year old mother to Ireland tovisit her roots. Because of this, I aminvestigating my maternal ancestryand had to invest in a genealogy program, Reunion. I have not had thetime to attack the program any fur-

It is interesting to note that most allof the opportunities vying for my freetime are centered around my use of acomputer, specifically Mac computers.I started using computers when I wasin college back in the early '60s. Thenit was mainframes with IBM punchcards and woe to anyone thatdropped a box of sorted punch cardson the way to the computer lab. Inthe 70s we connected to the mainframes with teletype terminals and110 baud modems. We loaded programs into the computer from papertapes and received printouts on thermal paper. I purchased my first AppleHe in 1983 and used that and anApple IIGS for home until 1993 whenI purchased a Centris 610. At work weupgraded from Apples to Macs, whichwe used until 1998 when our company dictated that there be but one platform in its hallowed halls. That unfortunately was Dell PCs. The best partof that change was I was allowed topurchase my Mac 6100/66 with extramemory, gigabyte hard drives, anaccelerator board and a 17" TrinitronMonitor for a $100.00, a handsomepiece of hardware in its day. Seiko Smart Label Printer 430Submitted by Sandy Foderick

If s always great to run into an oldfriend, and seeing Seiko exhibiting atMacworld Boston was no exception.In the 1990s, Seiko decided that theywould not develop label maker driversfor System 8 or later, yet there theywere on the show floor in 2005 withelegant Smart Label Printers runningOSX. I was glad to get the opportunity to try their new Smart Label Printer430. The tech specifications soundedgood - the SLP 430 is a black andwhite 203 dpi thermal printer so therewould be no ribbons or cartridges toreplace; the specs said that it couldprint at three seconds per label andwould work with 10.2 and up, as wellas with various iterations of theWinTel platform.

My first experience was great: everything I needed was in the box and theunit felt solid and well made. Notonly did the printer come with apower supply, software, and cables forboth USB and RS232C serial connections, it even came with a nice starterset of labels. The Quick Start guidewas easy to follow. The software waseasy to install and connectivity was abreeze, so that I was able to make itwork without reading the manual.Better yet, I could print a singleaddress via the included software, andthe unit did not waste labels, a realtreat compared to printing labels onan ink jet printer.

So, by now you are asking yourself,

"What's not to like? It sounds like agreat printer." Unfortunately, thehardware is solid but the softwareoffered an uneven experience. Someparts of the process were obvious:selecting an 8mm Spine yielded thecorrect configuration for labeling an8mm tape. Other parts were problematic. Once I had selected a templateand had things ready to go, I decidedto import a list of file labels. To dothis, I needed to read the on-diskmanual, where I found that importingwas considered an advanced optionand could be found under theAdvanced button - not exactly intuitive. To place text neatly on the template I found myself toggling backand forth between Layout andAdvanced screens, again, not too difficult but a bit klunky. The good newswas that the text to be imported couldbe clearly seen via the software screenprior to printing, saving me from theexpense of misprinted labels. I couldprint using any font and size withinmy system, limited only by the size ofthe labels I had selected.

A little more investigation showedthat I could print images, barcodes,consecutive serial numbers, a series ofaddresses from Entourage or myaddress book, imported text or evenmultiple return address labels with apostal barcode for easy routing. Onceinstalled in my word processor ordatabase, I could print directly fromwithin the application. While notblazingly fast, the Smart Label Printeraveraged about fifteen return labels in

a minute and close to twenty filelabels in the same amount of time, farbetter than using an inkjet with anAvery sheet. Our annual auction was held Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Washburn Library. This year we didn't have as much stuff as last yearsince we tried to limit our hardware to computers capable of running OSX with USB ports. In addition we were also lookingfor USB devices. Computers and hardware were sold at bargain basement prices and we sold everything. However due torelatively high advertising cost we may have to be more selective in the future in order to cover our costs. According to ourschedule the viewing and registration began at noon and the bidding started at 1 P.M. As in previous years Lisa Huston(our previous president) came up from Rochester to auction off all the equipment.Thanks Lisa, you did a great job and we really appreciate it. In fact you did such a good job so we finished selling all theequipment long before the closing of the library.Because of this we were able to get all the stuff out of the library and paid up before closing. Of course no auction can beheld without the contribution of donors so we would like to thank QUE computer and members as well as non membersfor making this auction a success. Last but not least thanks to Bruce Thompson for keeping track of the bids and makingsure all the receipts came out correct.
