HMThe “Horizontal Metropolis refers to closely interlinked, co-penetrating rural/urban realms, communication, transport and economic systems. It is a layered territorial construction where agriculture and non-agriculture economic activities create
an original mix.

The cities in the Horizontal Metropolis The vision of an isotropic mesh
of public transport
STEP 1The first no car islands: zone lievers in/out BCR, public transport nodes in the region (RER, metro, tram…). The no-car islands can be very small, even on neighborhood scale. BCR has the best connectivity and accessibility. As a result it is where the most no-car islands concentrated. Here we also can see that zone lievers are quite big (can be bigger than the city center of leuven), which give them a territorial importance.

STEP 2The public transport network will expend, which generates more nodes in the territory with enough connectivity and accessibility for no-car island. The no-car islands will also expand and merge into patches, especially in BCR. From islands, no car corridors can also be imagined..
