for my research work because I'm worried about the place where we live. I want

everybody to take care of our environment.

My research work is devoted to the environment

protection and solution of “green” problems in our

region. Introduction . Balance of

natureThere exists an inherent

equilibrium between most ecosystems with plants and animals interacting so as to produce a stable continuing system of life on the Earth.

The activities of human being disrupt the balance of

nature.

Section I. The problem of pollution in Ukraine.

An industrial and intensivelyfarmed country, Ukraine containssome of the most pollutedlandscapes in Eastern Europe.

Air pollution is especially severein many of the heavily industrializedcities and towns of south-easternUkraine, where we live. Coal-usingindustries, such as metallurgicalcoke-chemical plants, steel mills andthermal power plants are majorsources of high levels ofuncontrolled emissions of dust andharmful substances.

Almost all surface waters of Ukraine belong to the BlackSea and Sea of Azov basins. The high population density, heavyindustrial development, have given rise to chronic and seriouslevels of water pollution throughout Ukraine.

About half of the chemical fertilizers, herbicides andpesticides applied in the fields are washed off into rivers.Moreover, surface run-off from industrial territories is highlycontaminated.

Chernobyl was the world’s biggest nuclearaccident. More than thirty people died, and anothertwo hundred became seriously ill from radiationsickness. But we shall never know how many peoplewill die as a result of the accident. What Chernobylshowed most clearly was that one country’s nuclearpower stations are everybody’s problem.

Section II. Ecological conditions in Donbas

Donbas is a major industrial region of Ukraine which providesmost of the industrial production of Ukraine, and has the mostenvironmentally hazardous industries.

Despite the decline in production, resulting in the totalamount of emissions and discharges substantially reduces, theload on the biosphere of Donbas is still one of the largest inEurope. Enterprises in the region emit about a third of the totalvolume of pollutants in the Ukraine.

Acute problems in the region are: air pollution, water bodies and soils’ pollution. The density of dust

and gases in the atmosphere is about 70 tons per 1 square km, which is 6 times higher that the average

for Ukraine.

The main pollutants of water bodiesare the enterprises of mining andmetallurgical industry. Fresh water is usedby these enterprises, as well by powerstations and agriculture, so local riverssuffer from run-off, sewage, mine andquarry waters.

Donbas is in a state of ecological crisis.Without scientific exploration forovercoming the crisis and practical steps toimprove the environmental situation, itcould be catastrophic.

Conclusion.

I prepared the test “ Do you worry about theenvironment?’ and interviewed 50 people. And I gotthe following results:

62% of respondents care about the environmentand they have some good habits which help save it.However, there are probably a few other things theycould do;

20% of respondents definitely care about the environment.They think about it when they make everyday decisions. Ifmore people in the world were as good as they, the planetwould have fewer problems;

18% of respondents do not worry about the environment atall! They think pollution is someone else’s problem, not theirs.They think recycling and saving resources are too time-consuming.

I can make the conclusion that mostpeople, I interviewed, care about theenvironment, they care about what air theybreathe, the water they drink and the groundthey walk on.

If I were the leader of mycountry, I would ban carsbecause they cause too muchair pollution. In summer we canhardly breathe because of thetraffic fumes. Air pollutioncauses acid rain, too, which killstrees and plants. I would alsoimprove public transport.People wouldn’t need to usetheir cars so much then. I thinkpeople should walk moreoften, or use a bicycle. If theydid, our cities and towns wouldbe healthier places to live in.

My suggestions to make our town cleaner:

1. To put bins on every street corner, so people wouldnot drop litter in the streets;

2. To have more green areas, so people would havemore oxygen; the “green belts” not only providerelaxation, they are regarded as important allies inthe battle against air pollution.

3. To improve publictransport so peoplewould leave cars athome;

4. People shoulduse bicycles, so thetown would be lesspolluted;

5. People shouldrecycle things, sothere would not beso much rubbisheverywhere;

6. To create more parks so children would be ableto play safely.

7. To clear the town centre of traffic and clean theair. The centre should be left only for pedestriansand all traffic should be banned. The vehiclesshould be more out. They endanger the health ofpeople.

We must prepare for the future. On a personal level, that’s why we go to college, take our insurance and pay into pension plans. On a national level, that’s why we have laws, emergency services and hospitals.

But not all the news is bad. In the last 30 yearsthere has been a “Green” revolution. Today, manyscientists and world leaders realize that the Earth isin danger. Millions of ordinary people – both youngand old – understand this too. Some of thembelong to Green organizations in countries all overthe world. It’s really very simple. Either we stopkilling the Earth or we kill ourselves.

We need a cleaner,

healthier planet. Everybody must take care about

the environment and do

everything possible to make

your place of living better.
