Digital Music equippedwith Fairlight Series IIIToronto's newest state-of-the-art recordingstudio, Digital Music, which was recentlyopened by well-known studio musician RobYale (RPM - July 8/89), is equipped with aFairlight Series III, not Series II asreported, "the newest possible model,"reports Patricia Hope, Studio Manager,"which is the ultimate of C.M.I.(computerized musical instrument)technology . . . impressive and new."

It had been mentioned in the article thatDigital Music was equipped with a FairlightSeries II, but as Hope points out, "We didhave a Fairlight Series II several years agowhen it was the best system available and, although it was a forerunner of the system wenow have, the Series II is seriously outmodedby today's standards and is indeed anentirely different machine from the SeriesIII."

Bush congrats to Murray on opeAmong the hundreds of congratulatorymessages from show business personalitiesand government dignitaries that AnneMurray received on the eve of the opening ofthe Anne Murray Centre in Springhill, NovaScotia (July 28, 1989) was a hand-writtennote from U.S. President George Bush. It'sno secret that Bush regards Murray as one ofthe world's top recording stars and hisfavourite, which was revealed just after hewas elected President of the United States lastyear.

After the closing of the local coal minesin 1959, Springhill became just another jog inthe Trans Canada Highway, but now there isreason to stop. Unfortunately, there aren'tany highway signs bannering the fact thatSpringhill is the home of internationally -acclaimed recording star Anne Murray. Now,however, there is ample reason for the NovaScotia highway crews and Springhill itself toattract the eyes of tourists with effectivelysized and worded signs applauding the factthat Springhill has its own Anne MurrayCentre.

July 28th belonged to the Capitolsuperstar, and a crowd, estimated by policeto be close to 10,000, jammed the area infront of the centre. The Blue Knights,Amherst and Springhill police forces, thelatter decked out in their handsome light bluedress uniforms, plus the local RCMPdetachment in their scarlet tunics, added atouch of "Hollywood" to the eventfulafternoon.

A memorable happening during theofficial opening ceremony was Murray'spraise of her manager Leonard Rambeau."He has been by my side for twenty years, and without him I don't think any of thiswould be possible," said Murray to her veryattentive audience. She then undraped thebeautifully -designed Anne Murray Centrelogo that commands the centerdrop of thebuilding, and the official ceremonies wereover. financial support to the Anne Murray Centre, sponsored the opening ceremonies brunch.

Representing the company was Jim Foglesong, President of Capitol's Nashville

As the opening ceremonies came to a close, Anne Murray officially declared the Anne Murray Centre open with a tug at the draw strings to reveal this imposing logo.

RPM's Stan Klees and Walt Grealis were on hand for the Anne Murray Day in Springhill and had an opportunity to chat with the Capitol star as they strolled through the Centre.

Pierre does it again . . . ! Well, PierreJuneau has left us with another legacy, thistime it's in the field of news . . . CBC'sNewsworld, to be exact. What a coup for theCBC and for Canada. There's no one betterin the business of news and documentariesthan the CBC, which gives Newsworld a legup, and a tremendous base from which towork. Now, if they can get the fewannoying little grinches out of production, they'll be home free. After Pierre launchedNewsworld in Halifax, I could just hear himsay to his predecessor, "Now top that,"which of course he wouldn't say. By the way, have you noticed, no one is predicting whothe next boss of the CBC will be. (EC: Iwouldn't go out on the limb with that one!)

A break for the Cassette single. There'llbe news next week from Shorewood's TedSouthern about a break for record companiesand the recently launched Cassette singles.Shorewood will be offering any quantity of0 Cards for one flat price, which will allowfor a little more room for profit for therecord companies. Oh! To be a Nova Scotian ... ! You gottaget out across the country to meet the realCanadians . . . and I can recommend a trip toNova Scotia, particularly Springhill, as astart. Thanks to Capitol, I was front andcentre for the official opening of Springhill'sAnne Murray Centre and, as Stan Klees said"You have to see it to believe it." In fact, Idon't think there's a free standing edifice ofthis magnitude anywhere in the worlddedicated to one star. As Anne said, "I thinkit's wonderful that it's not being doneposthumously." By the way, I never saw somany Murrays in one place. No wonder theopening was such a success. Half theaudience was made up of Murrays andrelatives to Murrays and those who wishedthey were Murrays. Saddlestone launches newgospel country labelSaddlestone Publishing, with offices in NewWestminster, B.C. is a relatively newcompany on the Canadian country musicscene, primarily releasing country and gospelproduct on the Saddlestone label.

Through its pressing and distributionoperation, the company distributes on aworldwide basis, for artists under contract, aswell as others. Under contract to the label atpresent are Patty Mayo, Matt Audette andDorrie Alexander.

The Mayo release, The Bible Is TheLegacy, a gospel entry, was written byCandice James, who also produced thesession at Vancouver's Mushroom Studios.Session people included Brian Nicholl(acoustic guitar, pedal steel, dobro), FrankieRodgers (fiddle), Eddlie Leclair (lead guitar)Lynda Hunt (bass), Don Powrie (drums), andRandy Mueller (piano). James also wrote theflip, Rodeo Cowboy. Both sides are four -parts Cancon (MAPL).

James also wrote and producedAudette's single, I'm Missin' You, which wasalso recorded at Mushroom. Sitting in on thesession were Don Powrey (drums), JohnLacey (pedal steel), Nolan Murray (fiddle),Ross McCrady (lead guitar), Linda Hunt(harmony vocals), and Audette on leadvocals, rhythm and bass guitars. The flip,The Last Break, also written and produced byJames was recorded at Dell Studio in Surrey,B.C. with Brian Nicholl on pedal steel andAudette doubling on lead, rhythm and bassguitars. Both sides carry an MPL logo.

Clever, clever A&M ! "Big Al" Reid ofA&M dropped an interesting promo packageoff last week promoting a listening sessionfor Katrina And The Waves. I can think of a fewother awards Gino should be getting. If itwasn't for Gino the beautiful people in thistown would be unknowns . . . along withtheir ugly partners. It was Gino who first gotthe publicity _going for the Junos . . . ordoesn't anyone remember that far back?(EC: Are you on Gino's beautiful people list .. . ?)

Precedent setting CHOOups Canadian contentCHOO Radio - 1390AM in Ajax, Ontario(just east of Toronto) has taken the unusualstep of increasing its Canadian content musicrotation to 35 percent daily.

This is a significant step taken by thestation in view of the fact that the CRTCrequirement is only 30 percent Canadiancontent for AM broadcasters. However, asthe station's Music Director Mike Leaver, points out, "We feel that the high quality ofCanadian producton on the market todaywarrants our playlist reflecting that trend,"adding, "Good talent is good talent,Canadian or otherwise . . . and goodCanadian talent deserves fair airplay."

know him anywhere!) After the premiere performance of Colours In The Dark by the

Famous People Players, Linc Alexander,. the Lieutenant Governor of Canada (EC: Don't

you mean hizzonour Lincoln . . .

?) will present an award to Gino recognizing his

humanitarian effoTts on behalf of the Famous People Players. I can think of a few

other awards Gino should be getting. If it wasn't for Gino the beautiful people in this

town would be unknowns . . .

along with their ugly partners. It was Gino who first got

the publicity going for the Junos . . .

or doesn't anyone remember that far back?

(EC: Are you on Gino's beautiful people list .

. . ?)

Precedent setting CHOO ups Canadian content

CHOO Radio - 1390AM in Ajax, Ontario

(just east of Toronto) has taken the unusual step of increasing its Canadian content music

rotation to 35 percent daily. This is a significant step taken by the

station in view of the fact that the CRTC requirement is only 30 percent Canadian

content for AM broadcasters. However, as the station's Music Director Mike Leaver,

points out, "We feel that the high quality of Canadian producton on the market today warrants our playlist reflecting that trend," adding, "Good talent is good talent,

Canadian or otherwise . . .

and good Canadian talent deserves fair airplay."

Nominated in 1988 as one of Canada's top country music radio stations, CHOO that

same year was awarded the coveted Gold Ribbon Award for Community Service from

the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. For more information on CHOO's move

to more Cancon, contact Leaver or Joe (Conrad) Frechette at 416-683-4131.

Picture an evening with the Great WesternOrchestra. Strings? Brass? Percussion?Forget it. If that's what you would expect at aGWO concert, then you would be in for quitea shock when only three (count 'em, three)musicians walk on stage. Ladies andgentlemen, meet the Great WesternOrchestra!

The little trio with the big name iscomprised of Cindy Church (vocals, bass),David Wilkie (vocals, mandolin) and NathanTinkham (vocals, guitars). Based in TurnerValley, Alberta, the trio has been togetheras a unit for three years, but have longestablished themselves as musicians in theirown right, primarily as members of IanTyson's backing band. Their first single,Your Image Of Me, was released in 1988 ontheir own Centerfire Records label, and itenjoyed a warm reception at country radio. This single is included on their new, self -titled LP (which is being distributed byCBS), and the new single is entitled Train OfLife, which should just be arriving at radio.

There are twelve cuts in all on the LP,including a couple of tracks that may throwsome country fans for a loop. There Ain't NoCowgirls Down In New Orleans harks backto early '30s jazz, as does Cindy Church'sinterpretation of When You Wish Upon AStar. Also worth a listen is Tchaikovsky's(yes, Tchaikovsky) Waltz Of The Flowers, abeautiful instrumental that closes the LP.Certainly a surprise on a country LP, but a

Valley, Alberta, the trio has been together as a unit for three years, but have long

established themselves as musicians in their own right, primarily as members of Ian

Tyson's backing band. Their first single, Your Image Of Me, was released in 1988 on their own Centerfire Records label, and it

enjoyed a warm reception at country radio. This single is included on their new, self -titled LP (which is being distributed by

CBS), and the new single is entitled Train Of Life, which should just be arriving at radio.

There are twelve cuts in all on the LP, including a couple of tracks that may throw

some country fans for a loop. There Ain't No Cowgirls Down In New Orleans harks back

to early '30s jazz, as does Cindy Church's interpretation of When You Wish Upon A

Star. Also worth a listen is Tchaikovsky's (yes, Tchaikovsky) Waltz Of The Flowers, a

beautiful instrumental that closes the LP. Certainly a surprise on a country LP, but a

debuts with CBS release pleasant one nonetheless. The LP is full of

simple arrangements that are easy on the ears, and the overall sound is a far cry from

the style of many of today's country/pop artists, who seem to dominate country radio

at the present. This is a do -everything effort for the

trio. They have no manager, no agent, and they produced the LP themselves, which was

recorded in Calgary at Living Room Studios. When it comes to performing live, the group

incorporates not only country and bluegrass, but also jazz and classical into their

repertoire. "We think country people are not just one sided where they just want to hear

Cockburn to record live at Ontario Place concert

Bruce Cockburn will wind down his Big Circumstance tour with two dates at

Toronto's Ontario Place (Aug. 14 & 15), the 61st and 62nd concerts of the tour. Both final

concerts will be recorded for a live album, to be released next year. This will be Cockburn's

first live LP since Circles In The Stream which was released in 1977.

Immediately following his Ontario Place dates, Cockburn and his band will begin a

nine country European tour. Cockburn's latest release, Shipwrecked

At The Stable Door, which was taken from the Big Circumstance LP, is now moving up

both the RPM 100 Singles and A/C charts.

country music," says David Wilkie. Earlier this summer, GWO were invited

to play at the opening of the new Canadian Embassy in Washington, and they also took

part in the recent Friends Of The Oldman River concert, which also featured Gordon

Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia Tyson and Murray McLauchlan. Those shows no doubt gave the

trio a great amount of exposure, and with more touring in store and a major label

distributing their new LP, the rest of 1989 could prove to be quite fruitful for this

refreshing sounding trio.

Marigold hits AOR with Eddie M release

Marigold recently launched its first AOR project with new signing Eddie M. The band's debut album, Incognito, is available

through Electric Distribution. The lead single, a cover of Mississippi

Queen, a hit for Mountain in 1970, has received healthy airplay and is soon to be

accompanied by a FACTOR -supported video which has already been shot. The decision to

release the album's only cover as the initial single reflects the band's previous activity, under the name Foreign Exchange, as a

tribute to Hendrix, Cream and Mountain.

After having previously released independently, Eddie M is relieved to now

have the "time to concentrate on the music." He asserts. "Everything here seems to be

falling into place. People are promoting it who should be working in promotion. People are producing who are just producers. We're just being the band, writing the music,

instead of trying to be a record company, a promotion company and so on."

As Marigold is pleased at the success of their debut foray into AOR, the band is

similarly impressed with the label's efforts, preferring a small company to "a label where

you might be forgotten because you're the nine -hundredth act on the roster," he states.

"There's been a lot of concentration and, as a result, we can get the attention of the radio

stations and get some results." Currently, Marigold is negotiating with

several U.S. labels for an artist or product deal in addition to a U.S. management

agreement. The search is on for "somebody who has a track record," says Eddie, "rather than trying to re -invent the wheel.

"When you've been at it so long," he continues, "you discover re -inventing the

wheel takes a long time. We've tried it a few times already. So now we're taking a more

professional view and letting the people who do what they do best do it."

Once a majorforce in shock rock, Cooper's last fewLP's failed to reach the levels ofsuccess of his earlier works, but thiscould be the one to turn things around. This is strong rock and roll that AOR'sare sure to latch onto. Lock It Or Lose It promo launched by C -FAX

Victoria's C -FAX has joined forces with local police and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in an effort to reduce the

number of thefts from cars during the summer months. As C -FAX Vice President

Terry Spence points out, "In the warmer weather, people are more inclined to leave

windows down and doors unlocked, sometimes forgetting to remove valuables

from inside the cars . . .

resulting in a sharp increase in theft cases." The station's Lock It Or Lose It

campaign features brightly -coloured pamphlets that are left on cars which are

found to be unlocked or left with open windows, keys inside, valuables in plain

sight, or where there is no locking gas cap. There is also provision for a "thank you"

message to drivers whose cars are secure. "This is the second year we have been involved in this campaign," says Spence,

"and it works. It has helped reduce thefts from cars dramatically." The station absorbs some of the costs involved and provides

extensive publicity. The campaign is currently underway in the Municipality of Saanich.
