The flow-packThe flow-packwith cold-sealwith cold-seal
As the wording indicates, cold-seal allows the closing of the pack with just pressure, using the sealing bars at room temperature.
It is used on automatic Horizontal FFS machines, particularly for the wrapping of chocolate snacks and ice creams (that is all products sensible to temperatures), but more and more used in order to reach faster packing speeds (higher than 50m/min) and energy saving.
Fields of application:• Single-dose chocolates• Ice creams• Snack bars• Cards and gadgets• Single-dose washing-up tablets

ApplicationsApplicationsDuring the printing phase, the cold-seal is applied on the reverse
side in register.
Cold-seal is normally a natural derivative of the rubber tree, but there are also synthetic cold seals available that totally eliminate the risk of allergic reactions.
The films usually used for this kind of application are monolayer of
coextruded OPP base:
• TRANSPARENT OPP, that allows the visualisation of the product
• METALLISED OPP, that gives light barrier
• white and metallised CAVITATED OPP, that give an attractive appeal

CHARACTERISTICSCHARACTERISTICSThe following peculiarities are important for this kind of
wrapping:
• very brilliant inks;
• good adhesion of inks (in case of metallised film, it is necessary the print on the metal side);
• resistance to water of inks and release (for the ice-cream field);
• very low solvent retention after printing;
• very low odour level of the applied cold-seal;
• register of the cold-seal, to allow the correct sealing during the wrapping procedure;
• compatibility of the two most important components: release/cold-seal, to guarantee the correct unwinding of the reel during the cutting and the wrapping phases.

STRUCTURESSTRUCTURES
The film is printed on the treated side (transparent or white) with suitable inks. Over the inks a release coating is applied to prevent the adhesion of the sealing side in the reel, in order to permit unwinding of the film.
In line, on the opposite side, the cold-seal is applied in register.
The good water vapour barrier given by OPP film, enables the use of this structure in the detergent field for the single-dose washing-up tablets.

In this structure, the cold-seal can be applied in line or out of line.The importance of this duplex is given by the use of the metallised PET, that guarantees an excellent barrier to oxygen and to light, as well as to water vapour for the presence of the OPP layer.This structure has a good rigidity and can be used for snack bars, or for the over-wrapping of biscuits in thermoformed containers.

In this structures the cold-seal is applied on 100% of the reverse surface.
Mainly used for the wrapping of cards, the PAPER allows the tearing opening, while the total cold-seal application helps the wrapping because of the immobility of the contents.
