President’s Message

New World-Class Science Experiences to Inspire New Generations

Family learning opportunities in the arts and humanities are being greatly enriched at The Children’s Museum thanks to two extraordinary developments: the opening of The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture on June 17, and our recent announcement that the museum will be the new home of of the National Art Museum of Sport.

Intergenerational Learning The Children’s Museum has a rich history of presenting experiences that highlight trends from American popular culture. From Star Wars film props to exhibits like Inside Hollywood Film & TV and Transformers: Robots in Disguise, children and families are drawn to these experiences, and with good reason: they are accessible and meaningful to multiple generations, from young children to great-grandparents.

Because of this intergenerational appeal, the arts and pop culture are great springboards for conversation, allowing us to both share and build memories as families. With the new Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture, we will offer artifacts, exhibits, and interactives to help all ages become more aware of the influence popular culture can have on our lives.

Permanent and Temporary ExhibitsThe Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture will include two spaces. The first will be a 2,800-square-foot gallery featuring American POP, a permanent exhibit showcasing changing displays of comics and art, toys, fashions, TV and film costumes and props, and popular music artifacts from our vast collection. American POP will introduce visitors to common popular culture themes and how storylines change over time.

A second, 7,000-square foot gallery will be devoted to changing temporary exhibits that offer in-depth explorations of topics in American arts and popular culture, beginning with DANCE! For more information about these exciting exhibits, see pages 8 and 9.

The National Art Museum of SportOn May 3, the Boards of Trustees of The Children’s Museum and the National Art Museum of Sport gathered for a very special announcement: the gift of the National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS) to The Children’s Museum. Works from the collection will be displayed in the Efroymson Pavilion within the Riley Children’s Heath Sports Legends Experience, opening in spring 2018.

NAMOS is a collection of more than 900 paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and drawings and will give the museum a unique opportunity to unite and connect the arts and humanities with the science of health, fitness, movement, and sport. For more information about NAMOS and to view works from the collection, see pages 6 and 7.

Extraordinary family learning opportunities such as those offered by The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture and the National Art Museum of Sport would not be possible without the support of generous donors. It is in part because of all those who give—gifts both large and small—that The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is, and will continue to be, the biggest and best in the world!

Baseball great Jackie robinson jumping high to catch the ball, the incomparable golfer “Slammin’ Sammy” Snead hitting a drive, and the legendary tennis pro arthur ashe finishing a graceful backhand . . . these are just a few of the inspiring images that make up the national art Museum of Sport (naMOS) and its collection of art.

On May 3, The Children’s Museum proudly announced that it has been given the national art Museum of Sport

and its collection, which will be permanently featured in the Efroymson Pavilion within the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience, opening in spring 2018.

naMOS and its collection encompass more than 900 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and photographs that capture the spirit, endurance, and resilience of humankind. It includes works by american masters, such as George Bellows, Frank Benson, Winslow Homer, and more. The collection also features distinguished portraits by artists Leroy neiman, donald Moss, and ray Ellis of many world-renowned athletes, such as Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Bobby Orr, Johnny Unitas, and arnold Palmer.

A Hands-On ApproachHands-on and interactive activities and programs will be part of the naMOS experience. Children and families will be able to see exciting works from the collection and also draw, paint, and sculpt their own works of art in a special naMOS studio area. additionally, costumed professional actor interpreters will interact with visitors, offering historical background to the artworks and the moments in time they represent.

The History of NAMOSThe naMOS collection was founded in 1959in new York City by Germaine G. Glidden, a portrait artist and champion squash player. naMOS held its inaugural exhibition in 1968 at Madison Square Garden, followed by an exhibit at the 1968 Winter Olympics.

In 1987, naMOS exhibited at the 10th Pan american Games, held in Indianapolis, and in 1991 officially moved to Indianapolis, exhibiting in the Bank One/Chase Tower (now Salesforce Tower). In 1994, the collection moved to the IUPUI University Place Conference Center, where it was displayed until 2012 when the center was remodeled. Since 2012, the collection has been in storage at the nCaa headquarters while a permanent home was sought. That search has now ended, as naMOS and the collection will be permanently displayed at The Children’s Museum!

From Batman to Barbie, from comic books to cowboy boots, from Star Wars to star fashions popular culture is all around us, and it influences our lives today just as as it has for generations.

now The Children’s Museum is shining the spotlight on american pop culture so that families can share memories and consider the influence of pop culture in their lives.

Opening June 17 as part of The Galleries for american arts and Popular Culture, American

POP will help families and children explore how books, art, comics, TV, movies, music, fashion, toys, and more shape our desires. Featuring objects and artifacts from the museum’s vast collection, this permanent exhibit will be a great conversation starter between generations.

A Familiar StoryHave you ever found yourself watching a brand-new movie, but you know exactly how it’s going to end? For example, if Batman is alone and cornered by a dozen bad guys,

what’s going to happen? (answer: He will beat them all, one by one.)

You already knew the answer because pop culture storylines transcend time—they are reborn from one generation to the next. American POP will offer a digital interactive look at film and TV storylines that will let you predict (and check) the endings. Inside the exhibit, you will also:

• See comics from the Max Simon Comic Book Collection

• Put yourself in a digital comic book scene

• Explore toys and memorabilia from the museum’s newly acquired Batman collection

• See iconic outfits worn by music stars or in popular films

• discover how superheroes like Wonder Woman have changed with the times

• and more!

The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture are made possible through lead gift support from Lilly Endowment, Inc., Mel and Bren Simon, Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Gerald and Dorit Paul, Thelma L. “T” Wilds, Sharon W. Doiron, and Shirley S. Bryant.

The Humpty Dumpty CircusLively and entertaining, this Humpty Dumpty Circus is considered a work of American folk art. Created by the A. Schoenhut Company, the characters are made of painted wood and are ball-jointed—strung together with elastic to allow them to be moved into different positions. The Humpty Dumpty Circus and its performers were popular toys from 1903 into the late 1920s. The company ceased operation in 1935.

A new family musical . . . with goats! All the goats in the junkyard know the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff—or do they? In this interactive, puppet-filled musical, a young goat leaves the junkyard for the first time and stumbles into the fantastical land of the trolls. There she learns about the wonder of the natural world, and a new adventure begins in which trolls and goats learn to live and play together. Adults will love it too!
