Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday

This year, Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent, falls

on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day…and if you haven’t looked at your

calendar, Easter is on April 1 (April Fools ). It truly is a quirky

calendar coincidence that hasn't happened since 1945.

The Lutheran observance of Lent is commemorative as well as

penitential. We regard this season as a time of special spiritual

opportunity to contemplate the Passion of Christ, a time of

self-examination and repentance, and a time of growth in faith and

grace. While it is a somber time of remembrance, it is also a time for

joy and rejoicing, for we are saved through the death and resurrection

of our Lord.

Therefore, consider how fitting it is that the same day we begin our

Lenten journey falls on the day that we traditionally celebrate the very

essence of our God…love. After all, it was because “God so loved the

world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him

may not perish, but may have eternal life.”

The fact that these two events fall on the same day may actually

lend some real meaning to Valentine’s Day which has become so

secularized…the day is mostly about sending flowers, chocolates,

and pajama-grams, and not at all about the “no greater love” that

made St. Valentine so famous.

So perhaps Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday can work together.

They remind us that real love isn’t about cute little cherubs shooting

arrows through hearts…it’s about the joy of giving oneself to another

…it’s about the Love of all Loves, a love that suffered and died in

order to teach us what it means to have “no greater love.”

Please Come To The

Annual Congregational Meeting

on Sunday, February 4th

Please plan to join us on Sunday, February 4th for our Annual Meeting. We will have ONE

service at 9:30 a.m. (no Sunday School that morning) and go to the Mark Hurn Room for the

meeting right after worship. We will provide coffee, milk and juice and are asking the

congregation to bring some “self-serve” bakery or snack, like cookies, sweet bread. fruit, etc.

The congregation will hear reports from the staff and council, elect new and returning

members to the church council and vote on the budget for 2018. There are many important

items being discussed and voted on so we hope to see many of our members there! (If a few

were able to stay after the meeting to help clean up it would be wonderful! )

Afternoon Goodies and Games

Do you enjoy playing cards, dominoes, board games, etc.? If you answered

yes, then please join us in the Lounge on Monday, February 26, from

1:00-3:00 PM.

Pastor Laura will bring her cribbage board, dominoes, pinochle and regular

playing cards and invites you to bring your favorite games to play. You are

also invited to bring a snack/goodie to share…coffee, water and juice will

be provided. Hope to see you there …and bring a friend!

Shrove Tuesday PANCAKE SUPPER

February 13th at 6:00 p.m.

Traditionally, the day before Ash Wednesday was called Fat Tuesday.

The name predates the Reformation and referred to the common

Christian tradition of eating special, rich foods, especially pancakes

and pastries, before the fasting season of Lent began.

We are having a Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 13th at

6:00 p.m. Join us in the Mark Hurn Room for a delicious supper of

pancakes, sausage, juice and assorted pancake toppings! We are

looking for someone with a griddle who could help cook pancakes, and some clean-up help, especially

someone who knows how to run the dishwasher. If you can help, please contact Joni Reske, 598-9553 or

sjreske@gmail.com. A free will offering will be accepted to help cover the costs. We hope you will join us for

this fun evening!!

NO SUNDAY SCHOOL on February 4th:

The Annual Meeting will be on February 4th. Since there will be one service at 9:30 a.m.,

Sunday School classes will not be held.

FAMILY FIRST COMMUNION

preparation classes (4) will be held on:

February 25th, March 25th and April 15th at 11:00 a.m.

and

April 29th at Noon

All classes will be in the Youth Room. Lunch will be served.

The First Communion celebration will take place on May 6th at the 8:30 a.m. service.

Night at the Theater

All are invited to join us as we venture out to the Fireside

Theater in Fort Atkinson on Thursday, May 17th, for an evening

performance of 42nd

Street!

Here is a little info on this production (from the Fireside

website): The ultimate show-biz musical, 42ND STREET is

a celebration of Broadway, Times Square, and the people

who make the magic of musical theatre. Aspiring chorus

girl Peggy Sawyer comes to the big city from Allentown PA, and

soon lands her first big job in the ensemble of a glitzy new

Broadway show. Then just before opening night, the leading

lady breaks her ankle. Will Peggy be able to step in and become

a star? With a score chock-full of Broadway hits, including

“You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me,” “Dames,” “We’re In the Money,” “Lullaby of

Broadway,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and “Forty-Second Street,” this show is every musical

lover’s dream come true!

It truly should be a fun-filled, entertaining and delightful evening for us to come together in

fellowship. We’re hoping that you’ll be able to join us and here are the details:

Who? – Everyone…and please invite a friend

What? – The musical, 42 Street

When? – Thursday, May 17th. We need to arrive at the Fireside by 5:15 so we will leave

Holy Communion at 3:30. We will be traveling by caravan (Please let us know if you’re able to

drive).

How Much? – The cost is $68.95, which includes the Fireside’s Thursday Evening

Signature Buffet. Here is a description of their buffet: Our Chefs will prepare two special

entrée selections in addition to these Fireside favorites: Barbecued Pork Back Ribs,

Chicken Tenderloin Tempura with Brandied Apricot Sauce, Beer Batter Fried Cod, Shrimp

and Scallops Fusilli with Tomato Butter Sauce, Fresh Atlantic Salmon, Beef Tenderloin and

Roast Turkey from the Carving Station, Sweet Potato Soufflé, Whipped Idaho Potatoes and

Roasted Farm Fresh Vegetables. Banana Bread Pudding with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

for Dessert. Coffee, Tea and Milk are included with your dinner.

Why? – Just a great reason to get together for fun and fellowship !

We are hoping for a great turnout and have reserved 36 seats! So please sign up in the

church office by Sunday, April 15, and make the checks payable to Holy Communion. If you

The Food Pantry’s “Souper” Bowl Sunday is back by popular request! The New England

Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles will be playing in the Super Bowl on February 4th,

but we thought it would be fun to have a competition to pick the winning team before the

game. There will be two boxes in the narthex, labeled with Eagles and Patriots. You

choose your favorite to win the championship by placing cans of soup in that team’s box.

Let’s see how good we are at predicting the NFL champions, while helping the hungry in

our community. No matter the game outcome, the pantry wins! Look for the boxes in

the narthex January 28th and February 4th and vote often for your favorite team!

You may notice we don’t have a list of requested items in the Chalice this month. Instead, beginning February

18th and continuing through Lent, we will have an Easter tree in the narthex. The tree will be decorated with

paper eggs. Each egg will have a food item written on it. Please choose an egg (or several of them!), purchase

the items listed and bring the items and the paper eggs back to church and place them under the tree. With your

help we can empty our Easter tree while we fill the pantry cupboards.

We continue to need clean, lightly used paper or plastic grocery bags or similar bags from stores like Target or

Walgreens. Thank you to all who contribute to or volunteer at the food pantry. We could not continue this

ministry without you!

Warm Feet Mission

Thank you all for supporting the warm

feet mission. The mission was started in

January 2016 with 180 pair of thermal

socks. Our goal is warm feet and extend

God's grace to others. To date we have

purchased 4,320 pairs of socks. 3012

pairs have been distributed to the homeless and less fortunate

in Racine and Racine county. We just received 1,308 pair

this week and we hope to have many of those delivered by

the end of January. This year, because of the need, we have

also been able to donate underwear.

The Wednesday night youth group has been a huge help with

folding the socks and inserting the cards that include the

Aaronic blessing. Thank you all for your monetary support,

your help with folding socks and your prayers.

What a great crew for the Hanging of the Greens! Many thanks to Sue Beckett,

Dwight and Barb Pedersen, (Barb is our expert tree decorator!) Patrick BeBow, Jeff Nelson, Denise and Dale Stlllman, Darlene and Dave Krueger, and Anne Dudycha.

Another great crew took down and put away the Greens. Those who came to help were Sue and Bill Beckett, Greg Albright, Denise and Dale Stillman, Pastor Laura, Patrick BeBow, Darlene and Dave Krueger, Anne Dudycha, Connie Suwalski and

Scott Gagnon.

We are blessed to have such wonderful volunteers! Thank you and blessings to all of you in 2018!

The Quilting Group will meet

on Tuesday, February 13th at

1: 15 and on Tuesday,

February 27th at 1:15 in the

Mark Hurn room. Anyone

interested is welcome and no

experience is needed. We are

always in need FLAT full,

queen and king size sheets, that are in good

condition, to be used as backings for the

quilts. With the crazy weather recently, there

are certainly many victims around the world in

need of a warm, comforting quilt. In 2017,

our quilting group made over one hundred quilts

which were sent off to Lutheran World Relief.

Many Dates Still Open For Altar Flowers!

There are still MANY open dates for altar flowers! Each vase costs $22.50 and you can pick up the

flowers after the second service if you wish.. Dates with no one signed up are:

March 4, 11, 18 and 25, April 8 and 15, June 17 and 24, July 1, 8, 22 and 29, August 5, October 28,

November 4, 11, 18 and 25, and December 2, 9, 23 and 30. In addition there are openings for a

second vase of flowers most weeks. If you are interested in ordering flowers, please see the book in the back

of the sanctuary or fill out the form below and turn it in to the office with your payment. If the date you

chose is filled, we will contact you with alternative dates. Please do not put it in the offering plate

unless the outside of the envelope is clearly marked for Heidi in the office, so we can be sure we do not

miss any orders for altar flowers. Call the office 632-8802, if you have questions.

Every Easter our sanctuary is beautifully decorated with a garden of potted tulips, mums

and lilies given in honor or memory of our loved ones. The deadline for ordering Easter

plants is Sunday, March 18th. The cost for each plant is $24.50. You can pick up your

plants after the 10:45 service on Easter morning or the following week during office hours,

or you can choose to have it given to one of our shut-in members. If you want donate

your plant to one of our members, would you be willing to deliver it? Even if you don’t give a

plant, please think about delivering one. The office staff will be happy to give you the name

of a member who would love to receive a visit and a plant!

Soup Suppers are back, on Wednesday

nights during Lent, beginning February

21st. Come enjoy a warm, tasty bowl of

soup with some wonderful company at

6:00. Our midweek Lenten services are at

7:00 in the sanctuary. We need soup and

the lounge.

Monday Morning Bible/Book Study Presents… Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World

From one “breaking news event” to another, struggles at home, dealing with an illness, aging, or sometimes just simple day activities can fill our hearts and minds with worry and anxiety. From the back cover… Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Philippians 4:6-7 is the most underlined passage in the Bible. According to this promise, anxiety comes with life, but it doesn’t have to dominate your life. With God as your helper and this verse at your side, you can sleep better tonight and smile more tomorrow. You can talk yourself off the ledge and view bad news through the lens of sovereignty. You can discover a life that is characterized by calm and develop tools for facing onslaughts of anxiety.

Let’s invite God to reframe the way we face our fears and win the war on worry. By his power we will “be anxious for nothing” and experience the “peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.”

Save The Date!

Save the date! Date only right now because we're still working out the details, but we're Voyageur canoeing in the Apostle Islands

with Camp Amnicon, located in north, northern, really north Wisconsin. Pastor Jeff is the Interim Executive Director for Camp Amnicon. Cost will be somewhere between $300-$400, not including travel, and we'll leave the day before to be ready

for leaving the next morning. Dates are July 18-21, leaving on July 17 and staying

overnight somewhere. Limited to 12-14 participants. Registration information coming soon. If you're interested and

Hillbilly Elegy by J . D. Vance is the next

Book group selection for discussion on Wed.

Mar.21 at 10:00 in the lounge. A memoir of

a family and culture in crisis. An American

classic, an extraordinary testimony to the

brokenness of the white working class but also its strengths. It is the

story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you

were born with it hanging around your neck. It is a story of how

upward mobility really feels and a troubling meditation on the loss of

the American dream. "Should be required reading for everyone

who cares about what's really happening in America".

WOODMAN’S SCRIP - are you interested?

We’ve had numerous people request Woodman’s to be available for our SCRIP program.

It is POSSIBLE and here are the details.

1. We have to purchase a minimum of $5000 (yes that’s 5 thousand dollars) at a time.

2. We will receive a 5% discount. That’s a great discount considering the other major grocery stores are 3-4%

3. The cards come in denominations of $50 and $100.

4. After 1 year - if the card is not used, there is a $2 per month, per card fee. In other words, after a year, the cards

will start decreasing in value by $2 each month.

Based on the above information, if we have enough people group together to pre-purchase at least $2500, and

commit to continuing to purchase from HCLC. . . we should be able to swing the initial and continuing purchases.

1) pre-purchase (give us a check BEFORE you get the cards- by about a week)

2) commit to routinely making purchases in the future.

I would like to thank the entire Holy Communion family for the delicious meals,

cards, calls, and prayers while I was on sick leave. A cancer diagnosis is shocking

and frightening. The love and concern so many of you showed did much to help

boost my spirits on the days I was feeling low! While I still have to have several

more chemo treatments, the doctors feel certain they have gotten all the cancer

and I will have a full recovery. I am very grateful for excellent medical care and

the support of family and friends. Thank you all!

The Meaning of the Color Purple

On February 14th we begin the church season of Lent. Many churches have purple paraments on the altar, lectern and pulpit, and pastors wear purple stoles. Why purple?

In ancient times, purple garments were expensive and hard to find. The dye came from rare sea mollusks that

had to be crushed to garner their purple fluid. (One ounce of purple dye required 250,000 mollusks!) Then the right kind of fabric had to be placed in the dye, dried and made into clothing, which was time-consuming.

Generally, only wealthy people and members of royalty could afford purple garments. For example, in the story of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man “was dressed in purple and fine linen” (Luke 16:19, NRSV).

Purple is used in church sanctuaries during Advent and Lent because Christ is revered as the King of Kings.

The Chalice is a publication of

Holy Communion Lutheran Church,

a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The church office is open from 8:00-4:00 Monday through Thursday,

8:00—3:00 on Fridays. It is closed from 12:00—1:00 each day.

Worship services are at 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

The nursery is available during the 8:30 service.

A crying room in the narthex is available for children

and parents to use during all services.
