Portals Defined

• What is a Portal?– In architecture, a portal is a general term

describing an opening in the walls of a building, gate or fortification, and especially a grand entrance to an important structure.


Portals Defined

A web portal, also known as a links page, presents information from diverse sources in a unified way.

• Apart from the standard search engine feature, web portals offer other services such as e-mail, news, stock prices, information, databases and entertainment. Portals provide a way for enterprises to provide a consistent look and feel with access control and procedures for multiple applications and databases, which otherwise would have been different entities altogether.

• Examples of public web portals are AOL, iGoogle, MSNBC, Netvibes and Yahoo!


Portals Defined

An intranet portal is the gateway that unifies access to all enterprise information and applications on an intranet.

• It is a tool that helps a company manage its data, applications, and information more easily, and through personalized views. Some portal solutions today are able to integrate legacy applications, other portals objects, and handle thousands of user requests. For the enterprise user, it is also known as an enterprise portal.


Portals Defined

An enterprise portal, also known as an enterprise information portal (EIP) or corporate portal, is a framework for integrating information, people and processes across organizational boundaries.

• It provides a secure unified access point, often in the form of a web-based user interface, and is designed to aggregate and personalize information through application-specific portlets. One hallmark of enterprise portals is the de-centralized content contribution and content management, which keeps the information always updated.

• While PeopleSoft Portal 8.9/9.0 already introduced RSS and Collaboration via Collaborative Workspaces, PeopleTools 8.50 extends this functionality to Business Processes

• Blogging, Wikis, Related Discussions and Tagging are new features in PeopleTools 8.50.



• Related Discussions and Tagging in the Enterprise– Allows transactions and decisions to have

more insight due to social interaction and related data.
