Session Abstract

Should businesses considering computer systems acquisitions in general be excited about the IBM z10 announcements? Should performance analysts and capacity planners in particular be more or less excited? These will be the two key questions answered by the presented independent analysis of IBM's announcements. You will get ALL your related questions answered..

z10 Planning “Gotchas”

Gotchas remain the same for capacity planners1. Total MIPS / footprint versus Effective MIPS for a

customer workloads remain the Capacity Planner’s biggest challenge and opportunity to shine.

2. Effective Internal Throughput Rate (ITR) for your workloads will differ from most examples

3. Difficult to know which examples are most like yours4. Effective MIPS/CP range is greatest in zSeries

history; about 500 minimum to 900 MIPS maximum!5. One versus multi-footprint decision factors remain the

same and a significant opportunity for cost savings6. IO Subsystems issues remain the same

Capacity on Demand

New- Capacity for Planned Events (CPE)

Capacity Upgrades on Demand – CUoD

On / Off Capacity on Demand (CoD)

Backup Upgrades (CBU)

vWLC – Variable Workload license issues remain the same!

HiperDispatch = YES / NO Why? Increase throughput by creation of links between

logical unit of work and the physical processors Logical processors are classified:

Vertical High – dedicated to physical processor Vertical Medium – get remainders of shares distributed to them Vertical Low - only serviced when other partitions do not use

their entire share PR/SM

Ties high priority logicals to physicals Distributes shares to medium and low priority logicals

z/OS ties tasks to subsets of logical processors (LP) Dispatches work to high priority subsets of LPs Parks low priority processors that are not needed

RMF Processor Activity Report

Two new columns are added to the report: Parked % - Percent of the time the LP was in a parked state Logical Processor Share % - Percent of a physical processor

share that PR/SM will give to this LP if it can use itHigh Priority LPs have 100%Medium Priority LPs have between 1% and 100%Low Priority (discretionary) LPs have 0%

MVS Busy Time re-definition:

MVS BUSY TIME % = (Online Time - (Wait Time + Parked Time)) / (Online Time - Parked Time) * 100

Effective Planning Steps

List ordered from least to most time and cost consuming activities, and highest to lowest risk for error.

1. Obtain and use zPCR published numbers

2. Perform zPCR modeling exercises to establish your performance boundaries and ITRs

3. Perform workload level analytical modeling of your workloads.

4. Measure ITRs of your workloads via benchmarks

Why Buy a z10 ASAP or Wait?

Buy a z10 ASAP if: Require added capacity per mainframe footprint Bleeding edge shop Cost justifiable benefits from the higher speeds

Wait or consider z9 or even older if: Older zSeries provide all the functionality required

by the business Total cost of ownership (TCO) of older models vs.

z10 is more than X%, $Y lower (X% and $Y value is very site dependent)
