What is Social Software?
Built around the following premises – Conversational interaction between individuals or groups – Social feedback – ratings, reputations– Social networks – create and manage a digital expression of
people’s personal relationships, and to help them build new relationships
Social software tends to be “bottoms-up”, based on the desire of individuals to affiliate– Opposite approach of former groupware and traditional
collaborative tool approaches – Groups are self-forming and self-organized - “a sprawling,
tentacled world” The essential elements of social software will be incorporated
into conventional software, changing the way collaboration and communication is managed

Adapting Social Tools for the Enterprise
Look at existing business and knowledge processes– Which would benefit?– What becomes enabled? – Where does your culture support this?
Example of MITRE newsletters and “intelligence gathering”– Was being done at MITRE but in a variety of ways – Only Analysts could contribute, not end users– Social bookmarking and tagging extended and improved this
capability Undertaking a social network analysis study to analyze the
impact of social tools on MITRE user’s social networks
