Introducing Kid ConnectionA Workshop for Teachers

FocusTo prepare teachers to successfully plan, teach, and lead Kid Connection by exploring the values and small group/large group dynamics of this curriculum.

Room SetupWhether your setting is cozy and intimate or large and spacious, establish a welcoming atmosphere with a few simple touches, such as flowers or a colorful tablecloth. Providing refreshments is always a great way to produce smiles! Play songs from the Kid Connection Year 1, Unit 1 Program CD as people arrive, and have copies of the agenda (Handout 1, page 13) available.

The So What? section of this workshop will involve describing a variety of activities that take place in an actual KC session. If your group will be under 20 people, and the room you are meeting in is large enough, set aside a table or two to display the game board and other items listed in that section.

Time1 hour, 15 minutes (1 hour in some settings)

Supplieso This workshop requires more supplies than most Faith Alive workshops because it involves

preparing samples from each step of a KC lesson for grades K-6 (including optional steps). This will help your teaching team become familiar with the types of activities they will be leading throughout the year. At the beginning of each step you’ll find a list of the supplies needed to complete that portion of the workshop. The complete list is located on page 40.

What’s Up?Props Name Game

GoalTo introduce the workshop participants to one another and give them a taste of the creative teaching methods used in Kid Connection. Note: Use this activity even if the workshop participants know one another.

Time7-15 minutes (depending on group size and the length of your devotional)

SuppliesHousehold items that may be useful in storytelling during KC sessions include:o hairbrusho wooden spoono hatso scarfo water bottleo towel

Before the Workshop Beginso Place props on participants’ chairs. It’s okay to have fewer props than the number of

participants; props can be passed around and shared. Set aside a prop for yourself so that you can start the game. As people arrive and find seats, let them know that they should keep the items nearby because they’ll be using them soon.

Welcome teachers to the workshop, expressing your enthusiasm for the year ahead and your appreciation for their interest in nurturing the faith of children.

Open with prayer. Then say something like this:

Before we explore Kid Connection, we’re going to take a moment to connect with one another and exercise our creativity. The items you found on your seat as you arrived make great props for the Bible story-telling portion of Kid Connection. Today, we’re going to use them to get to know each other. So grab your prop and think of a way to use it to help you share your name and something about yourself.

Start the group off by saying your name and briefly sharing one fact about yourself in an expressive way. This game is intended to be lighthearted and fun, so don’t be afraid to be animated! For example, you may hold the wooden spoon and move your arms like a conductor while saying, “My name is Maria and I love to sing in the choir, Lalalalala . . . “ Some of the teachers will follow suit with their own wacky renditions, while the more timid among you will be less demonstrative. That’s okay—not everyone enjoys the spotlight!

DevotionsFeel free to adapt or use the devotional included on pages 38-39, or develop your own devotional to share with your Sunday school team as you begin a new season of ministry together.

Guess What?GoalTo give teachers and/or parents an overview of the values, dynamics, and content of Kid Connection.

Time15 minutes

Supplieso PowerPoint equipment or an overhead projectoro “Introducing Kid Connection” PowerPoint (PP) or transparencieso Handout 2, pages 14-15 for each participant: “What About Learning Styles?”

Slide 1Kid Connection is the newest curriculum from Faith Alive Christian Resources.

Slide 2Faith Alive recognized a need for a curriculum that uses a large group/small group format rather than grade level divisions to fit the unique dynamics of smaller ministries.

Slide 3KC uses creative storytelling, small group mentoring, and gift-based leadership so that both small and large churches can have faith formation programs that connect with kids and families.

Slide 4The three “R”s reflect the core values of KC—values that shaped every aspect of this curriculum.

Slide 5Every session of KC is designed from a Reformed perspective, because we believe every story in the Bible tells us about God and must be understood as part of the one story of God’s redemption and restoration of this fallen world through Jesus Christ.

Slide 6Kid Connection builds community through small group activities that connect young people with leaders and peers.

3

Page 6: © 2007, Faith Alive Christian Resources. All rights reserved....—a worksheet about multiple intelligences Before the Workshop Begins o Photocopy Handout 2 back to back so that the

True community involves celebrating the diversity of God’s family. The people who wrote KC are from a variety of races and cultures—just like the kids and teachers who will use KC. The sessions encourage kids to learn about, love, and appreciate all people.

Slide 7The relational aspect of Kid Connection also involves encouraging families through a fun-filled magazine called Guess What! The magazine connects parents, kids, and siblings to help parents pass their faith on to the next generation. It’s one of the most exciting features of Kid Connection, because home is the primary place where faith is nurtured in children. Each month families will take home a copy of Guess What! It’s full of stories, games, crafts, Bible readings, and faith-building activities that encourage families to talk about their faith and grow together.

Slide 8While the message of the Bible never changes, kid culture does. Kid Connection uses teaching methods that will excite, inspire, and challenge today’s kids.

Slide 9These teaching methods include lesson plans that engage the eight different intelligences identified by Harvard professor Howard Gardner. When you teach to a variety of learning styles by including lots of different kinds of activities, your sessions will be fun. And that’s good. When kids have fun, they’ll not only learn more, but they’ll want to come back next week. Because the gospel is good news, it’s very appropriate to celebrate and have fun together!

Multiple intelligences aren’t just a kid thing!

[At this point, distribute copies of Handout 2 (page 14-15) “What About Learning Styles?” Ask the group not to flip it over to read the “key” on the back until they have finished taking the quiz. Give par-ticipants a few minutes to analyze their personal preferences, using a 1 for the activities they find easiest and must fun to do, and 8 for those they find most difficult or unpleasant to do. All other activities should fall somewhere in the range between these two. After a few minutes, survey the group. For each list of activities, ask those who rated them “1” to stand up, and those who rated them “8” to stand up.]

The diversity you see in your responses to this quiz is the same kind of diversity you’ll find in the kids you work with each week. Because Kid Connection provides a variety of options that appeal to the different intelligences, you can plan a lesson that will connect with each kid.

Slide 10Kid Connection is also relevant to kid culture and small churches because it uses a large group/small group format that combines the excitement of a “crowd” atmosphere during large group time with the personal attention of mentors during small group time. Research shows that the best way to introduce kids to the Bible story in a smaller church setting is to present it to all ages at once.

In Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions, author George Barna describes how his research revealed that effective ministries tended to provide the following three elements:

• Communicated important information and lessons in ways the student relates to.

• Maintained low adult/child ratios so kids received personal attention and felt “known, loved and significant.”

• Balanced activities done in small groups with those done in a large-group setting.

— Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions, George Barna, Gospel Light, Ventura, California, 2003

Slide 11The challenge of a multiage curriculum is how to include every age group in a meaningful way. Many preteens are dealing with physical and emotional changes that make them want to avoid possible embarrassment and always look cool. Self-conscious kids, who want to avoid doing anything they perceive as childlike, probably will have a hard time joining in with some of the large group stuff—not necessarily because they don’t want to, but because they can’t risk looking silly.

Be patient. Respect their feelings. Don’t force kids to participate if they feel uncomfortable, and don’t take their comments personally. Remember, older kids may roll their eyes, sing without moving their lips, or respond to questions in monosyllables—but they are still listening in their own “cool” way!

Consider making older kids leaders in training by giving them special responsibilities such as being part of a “setup team” that prepares the room each week, running the CD player, or being a buddy to a younger child. In each session KC provides tips on creative ways to involve preteens.

Slide 12The large group/small group format encourages Kid Connection teachers to serve in their areas of giftedness. Each lesson requires only one large group leader as well as a small group leader for each small group you have planned for that day.

5

Page 8: © 2007, Faith Alive Christian Resources. All rights reserved....—a worksheet about multiple intelligences Before the Workshop Begins o Photocopy Handout 2 back to back so that the

Slide 13Large group leaders may have a variety of gifts that include teaching, leading, or creative abilities. They are folks who love to tell a good story, who aren’t afraid to look silly, and who have a flair for the dramatic and a passion for children’s ministry.

Slide 14Small group leaders may have different gifts such as hospitality, encouragement, or shepherding that make them great mentors. They are natural encouragers, good listeners, and communicators who relate well with kids and who want to help kids take one step closer to God. Large and small group leaders share the responsibility of teaching Kid Connection. They serve as a team, using their unique personalities, talents, and gifts during their portion of the meeting to communicate God’s love and faithfulness to kids.

Slide 15Now it’s time to take a look inside the curriculum to get a feel for how it really works for Sunday schools or mid-week programs!

Each Leader’s Guide has all the material for grades K-6, and the program CD has the music and reproducible handouts for each quarter. Having the reproducible materials on disk means saving money when the kids cycle through KC and teachers use the lessons a second time.

If you prefer, you may order one Guess What! family magazine (the take-home portion of KC) per household, rather than one per child.

Slide 16The KC curriculum is written in themed units that are four weeks long. These units teach stories of the Bible in chronological order. Years 1 and 3 focus on the Old Testament, while Years 2 and 4 teach the New Testament. Each Leader’s Guide includes a quarter of the year’s lesson plans, 12 sessions of teaching material grouped into three units.

In a few minutes we’ll see the sections of KC come alive as we look more closely at a lesson called “Family Feuds” from Quarter 1, Year 1. (Pass out a copy of Handout 3, pages 16-35, or have leaders turn to page 139 of the Year 1, Quarter 1 Leader’s Guides if they've brought them along.)

Slide 17The Program CD works hand-in-hand with the Leader’s Guide. It contains children’s and leader’s resources for one quarter of Kid Connection. The program CD also includes an audio version of all the songs you’ll need for each lesson. The Sing With Me songbook is another great resource to use along with KC because it contains most of the songs suggested for each lesson.

6

Slide 18Each session begins with the Scripture text being studied and with the specific focus of the day’s lesson. You’ll want to spend some time praying through this Scripture passage as you prepare to teach.

Slide 19Next is the Memory Connection Bible passage that highlights Scripture you can memorize together. You’ll notice two passages, one for kindergarten-grade 3 and the other for grades 4-6.

Slide 20Using the Program CD, you’ll print off Memory Cards like these to help kids practice the verse at home. Two versions are included (Today’s New International Version and the New Revised Standard Version), to accommodate your church’s preference.

Tip: The small group portion of KC is a great time to have kids practice Scripture memory. Consider creative ways to encourage kids to collect Memory Cards and carry them around for weeklong learning. For example, use colorful cardstock to print the verses, laminate them with contact paper to make them durable, or punch holes in them and hang them on a key ring to make them portable.

Slide 21The next section is especially for teachers!

“Hear It” is a short leader’s devotional that will help you reflect on the Scripture text before each lesson. It includes ideas for personal prayer in “Pray About It” and teaching tips in “Tell About It.” So pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and spend some quiet time with God before you prepare your lesson.

Slide 22As you prepare to teach Kid Connection, you’ll notice these icons listing the intelligences that are addressed in each section of the lesson. As you get to know your students better, these icons will help you identify their intelligences as you observe how they react to each section of the lesson. The icons will also help you choose which options will connect best with them.

7

Slide 23During the lessons you will find options indicating ideas you can use to create the lesson that works best for you and your kids. The choice is yours! There may be an alternative story or activity that you know will really connect. Tips are scattered throughout each lesson to make your job easier by offering helpful suggestions and ideas.

Slide 24The first portion of Kid Connection is the large group time that includes praise, prayer, and an attention-grabbing Bible story presentation. Meeting as a whole group in the beginning of the session also provides the opportunity to welcome newcomers, share information, and take an offering, if you choose.

Large Group time is divided into two sections: What’s Up? and Guess What! Under each of these headings you’ll find the goal, estimated time, supplies, and before-class preparation that each section will require.

Slide 25Kid Connection starts with What’s Up?, the section where kids receive a warm welcome, have opportunity to praise God, and hear an exciting introduction to what’s coming up. What’s Up? tells kids you’re glad they came, God loves them, and they’re going to have fun!

Slide 26Now that you’ve got everyone’s attention, it’s time to present the Bible story in a way that will wow the kids! That’s what Guess What! is all about—it contains the script, instructions, and tips that will help you keep kids engaged in learning God’s Word.

Slide 27After the story the large group leader’s job is finished. Now comes the small group learning time where kids connect with God, with their small group leader, and with peers. We suggest grouping kids into grades K-3 and 4-6.

These groupings make it easy to add new small groups as more kids begin to join the program. For example, a small church may stick with two small groups: a K-3 and a 4-6; while a larger church using KC may have a K-1 group and a 2-3 group, all using the same K-3 material.

Slide 28A special section at the end of each lesson helps you adapt both the small group and large group times for an audience of one! “One-on-One Fun” is perfect for children’s ministry programs that consist of a leader with one or two children, for larger programs that have weeks when only one kid shows up, or for home schooling Bible lessons.

Slide 29Just as large group time is split into two parts, small group time also contains two sections: So What? and Do What? These sections help kids dive in and respond to the Bible story in age-appropriate ways.

Slide 30In the So What? section, kids have heard the Word; now it’s time to apply it!

In the safe and loving community of a small group, kids and leaders build relationships and engage in a variety of activities designed to help kids connect the Bible story to their lives.

Slide 31Each session ends with Do What? which offers an opportunity for kids to respond to God through activities that may include prayer, journal writing, drama, movement, games, crafts, service, and more.

Slide 32In case that isn’t enough; you’ll find extra activities and games in the What Else? Section. It’s perfect for ministries that have longer children’s programs, or for those days when you’ve still got time left!

Time20 minutes

SuppliesThe supplies for this portion of the workshop come from the supply lists for each section of the lesson “Family Feuds” in Session 2 of Unit 3 of KC (handout 3). Refer to the supply lists in the sample lesson to prepare for this portion of the workshop.

o A copy of Handout 3, pages 16-36 for each participant

Before the Workshop Beginso Follow the instructions for setup under each step in the sample session (handout 3,

pages 16-36).o Arrange the small group materials on tables around the room, or keep them up front and

out of sight.

Then say something like this:

Now that you’ve seen an overview, it’s time to get an idea of how KC feels in the classroom. We are going to go through the lesson together, starting with the What’s Up? section. If you were preparing to teach the lesson, by this point you would have spent time praying for the kids, and reading the Get Connected devotional. You would also have looked through the Supplies and Before Class instructions and prepared the necessary materials for the age group you’ll be teaching (including printing out the reproducible pages).

You would begin the lesson just like this:

Refer to the lesson plan on handout 3, pages 17-19 to lead the teachers through the large group What’s Up? and Guess What! sections. When you come to the place where the group would sing, note the songs that would be sung, but don’t take the time to sing them now. Remind the teachers that they heard the songs playing from the Program CD when they came in.

When you’ve finished presenting the Large Group portion, let the teachers know that this is when kids would be dismissed for small groups. If your group is seated lecture-style, have everyone take a moment to move their chairs into the circle for a small group feel (if possible). Pass around the materials for each activity as you describe them. If your group is large, have everyone move around the room together, viewing the materials for the activities at different tables.

Walk the leaders through the K-3 small group time by saying:

The first thing you want to do for the K-3 kids is welcome them warmly by saying something like this:

“Wow, I’m so glad to see all of you here today!” Then ask them about the highs and lows of their week: “Sammy, what was the best thing that happened to you this week?” “Did any of you have a challenge this week that you’d like to tell us about?” “Did your family do any of the fun activities in the Guess What! magazine this week?”

You might also take this time to go over the memory challenge and practice saying it together. Then, before introducing the activity, you’ll spend some time wondering aloud with the kids about the story they’ve just heard.

“I wonder how Jacob felt when he realized he’d been tricked.” “Were you surprised to find out that Laban tricked Jacob?” “Let’s all think of a time when we worked really hard on something, and had to start all over again . . . .” “Maria, when did you have to start over?”

Next we move into activities.

Use the notes from the So What? section for K-3, found in Handout 3, page 20 to describe and display the “A Schemer Gets Schemed” game, but don’t take time to play it now. Then read the prayer that concludes that section.

Move into the Do What? section, displaying and explaining both the “Sharing God’s Love’” card and the “God Loves Us” poster. Emphasize that options are available so teachers can choose to do one or the other—they are not expected to do both. When one option involves a lot of detail and preparation the other option is often very simple. Teachers can choose the option that will work best for the kids in their class and the amount of preparation time they have available.

If you have time, ask teachers which option they think the children from their church would connect with, or which one they may prefer to teach. Briefly highlight the What Else? Option for longer class times or extra activities.

When you’ve finished describing the K-3 small group time, let the group know that the 4-6 small group time follows the same pattern as the younger kids’ time but is geared toward an older group.

Use the So What? lesson plan from Handout 3, pages 23-26, to walk the group through the discussion questions as you did with the other small group. This Bible discussion time is more extensive, involving a demonstration of how God sees the whole picture of our lives. Do the demonstration so your group can see how it would work in a classroom. Then refer to the “Dear Jacob” letters as you describe Option A. Next, point out the “Action!” cards and have your group pretend to be students as they participate in “Option B: Action!”

After they have done Option B, ask them which activity they would want to use with the grade 4-6 kids at their church, and why.

For the Do What? section, make a few sample “Word Image” cards in advance. Point out the goal of this activity, and describe it without having the group participate in it. Note that the What Else? activity for this lesson is the same for the K-3 group as it is for the 4-6 group, but this is not always the case. Flip to the final page of the lesson and note the One-on-One Fun option, which is perfect for one-kid classrooms or for homeschooling.

Do What?

GoalTo give teaching teams an opportunity to respond to the workshop by asking questions and thinking about how Kid Connection would fit into their church education or children’s ministry programs.

Time10 minutes

Supplieso One copy of Handout 4; page 37 for each workshop participant.

Now that the teachers have seen the lesson unfold, encourage them to ask questions and dialogue about the curriculum and how it might work in their church settings. If you are using this workshop for training your own teaching team, work through Handout 2 together. If you are presenting to coordinators or teachers from several churches, pass out Handout 2 as a worksheet for them to take back to their own churches for reflection or discussion.

Conclude by thanking the teachers for coming to the training and for committing themselves to nurturing the faith of children. Close the workshop with prayer.

Connected: Christ and the Church

Say, Scripture is full of word pictures that describe the special connection between Christ and his church. God calls us to himself and to one another so we might experience the unity that is modeled in the Trinity.

In John 17 Christ prays that all believers would be one, so that the world would believe that God sent him. Our special connection with one another testifies to the power of Christ, and our relationship with Jesus empowers us to nurture the faith of kids as they connect with Christ and with God’s people in meaningful ways.

Photocopy the verses below, cut them apart, and distribute them to individuals or groups of two to four people (depending on the number of participants at your workshop). Ask them to consider what the verse tells them about the relationship Christ has with believers, and the relationship believers are called to have with one another. Have them illustrate these connections using Play-Doh, paper and crayons, or pantomime.

Allow 5-7 minutes for groups to work. Have each group present its illustration, and conclude by asking the question below, writing the answers on a whiteboard or on newsprint. Then ask, What characteristics or words will describe our ministry to kids this year, if we strive to live out these verses?

John 15:1-8 NLT“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so that they will produce even more. You have already been pruned for greater fruitfulness by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful apart from me.

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who parts from me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted! My true disciples produce much fruit. This brings great glory to my Father.”

Romans 12:4-6 NLT“Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are all parts of his one body, and each of us has different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the others.”

Ephesians 2:19-22 NLT“So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. We are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We who believe are carefully joined together, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also jointed together as part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.”

Ephesians 1:4-5, 1 John 3:1 NLT“Long ago, even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. And this gave him great pleasure....”

“See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called his children, and we really are!”
