We’ll study how the Bible proves itself!

Internal Evidence The next test of the accuracy of

any book is the internal evidence:

What does it actually say? What does it claim about itself? Does it contradict itself? Does it make impossible

statements?

Page 13: 2007 by David A. Prentice We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

What the Bible Says about Itself The Bible claims to be: The Word of God Written down by human

authors & claims all of it is dictated

or inspired of God

Are the Historical Circumstances Verified? Much of the Bible describes

circumstances in which the authors lived; like:first-century PalestineIsrael a thousand years before Christ

Past critics claimed many books of the Bible were written long after they claimed to be

But guess what?

Page 16: 2007 by David A. Prentice We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Archaeology says the Details Match Exactly! In the last century, the critics claims were

proven false by Archeology Archeology repeatedly shows that the

circumstances and details described match exactly with known historical events:skeptics used to claim the Biblical kings of

Judah and Israel were mythical figures like Greek and Roman mythology

Various recent digs in the Middle East have unearthed ancient monuments and inscriptions that mention many of the Biblical kings by name

All in all, the skeptics are looking pretty foolish

THE CRITICS

Let’s Learn to Answer

Page 21: 2007 by David A. Prentice We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

CRITICS HAVE SAID THE BIBLE IS FULL OF CONTRADICTIONS AND ERRORS

YET . . .PAGE 8 BLANK: ASK THEM FOR EXAMPLES!!!

THEY CAN’T PROVE A SINGLE ONEOFTEN, THEY CAN’T EVEN NAME ONE

THEY CAN ALMOST NEVER SHOWYOU ONE FROM SCRIPTURE

NEVER HAVE THEY DONE SEARCHING TOSEE IF IT’S TRUE!!!

For 1000’s of Years

Page 22: 2007 by David A. Prentice We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

So, When Confronted with “Contradictions”

Or “Errors”

Page 8 blanks: Ask them for examples

Then ask if they can show it to you in scripture/name at least the book

Then ask if they’ve ever studied it out themselves!

DO WE REALLY BELIEVE ALL THOSE MIRACLES OR WAS IT JUST . . . ?!?

Growing Mythology?!?

Some Skeptics Say it’s all just Made up Long

After the Originals Were Written!

Some of Paul’s epistles were the among the first written

1 & 2 Thessalonians: A.D. 521 Cor., Gal., Rom., 2 Cor.: AD 57 – 58

James: ca. A.D. 60Hebrews: between 61 and 70

Page 25: 2007 by David A. Prentice We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

But Look Soon It Was Written After the Actual Events!

Tradition says that Matthew was originally written in Hebrew, then translated into Greek in A.D. 60

Mark is believed to have been written afterward, between 60 and 70 A.D.

Page 26: 2007 by David A. Prentice We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes We Will Be Using Last Week’s Notes ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

If a Company Boasts, “We’ve Been Here for 60yrs” . . . Not Really Impressive Because It’s Still a

Relatively New Business, Right?Luke and Acts came after Mark. Acts concludes with Paul’s imprisonment, so it must have ended before the last of the “Prison epistles”:Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon, Philippians, A.D. 61-63)

Even the Books Written Last are Astonishingly Soon After the Actual

Events

Dates of 1 and 2 Tim: ca. 64-67 Titus ca. 651 Pet. ca. 662 Peter and Jude ca. 67. 1, 2, and 3 John, perhaps 85 or 90 A.D.John’s Gospel ca. 90Finally, Revelation, ca. 96

Does the New Testament Reflect a Growing Mythology in the Early Church?

Does the New Testament Reflect a Growing Mythology in the Early Church?

If the miracles of Jesus were myths added later, the later books should record more and more of them.

John’s Gospel, one of the last books, pays less attention to miracles than

do the earlier writings. And one of the earliest books, 1 Corinthians, reports that Jesus appeared to 500 people at a time

after His resurrection. The Gospels, written years later, list only a few witnesses.

If this is a myth, it’s shrinking instead of growing!
