The Story of the Pluy
PROLOGUESCENE-Ante-chamber in the Palace of Karlsberg.
The Story of "The Student Prince" takes us ba ck to the 19th century-the spring of 1860 to beprecise-and the play opens in on ante-chamber in the Royal Pcloce at Karlsberg. Here we find the King'sgrandson, Prince Karl Franz, receiving the congratulat ions- at the Prime Minister, Count Von Mark, on thebrilliant result of his entrance examination to the University of Heidelberg. Doctor Engel, the Prince's tutorfor the past eight years, is appainted a Privy Councillor and is ordered to accompany the Prince to Heidelberg"to watch over his daily life, to preserve Court etique tte, and to keep the Court informed of the Prince'sconduct." The Doctor refuses to become a "spy" and becomes actually more of a friend and counsellor.
ACT ISCENE-Garden of the Innof the 'Three Golden Apples", at Heidelberg.
They arrive at Heidelberg and toke up quarters at the Inn of the "Three Golden Apples", kept by"Ruder", and they receive a royal welcome from the innkeeper's niece, Kathie, with whom the Prince falls inlove The festival of the Student Corps is in progress at the Inn and, despite the protestations of his valetLutz, the Princ.e is very soon a member of the Saxon Corps and enjoying the company of the students.
ACTII
SCENE-Sitting-room of "Prince Karl" at the Inn. (Four months later)
The curtain rises and we find Mr. Lutz sound asleep waiting for the arrival pf the Prince. Mr. Lutzis disturbed by "Gretchen", the maid, and Kathie, who insists on proceeding with "the doily round, thecommon task". The Prince eventually arrives with his Student friends, Detlef, Lucas and Von Asterberg, andDoctor Engel. They have been mixed up with a wedding party and they have all "kissed the bride". At thispoint the Duchess arrives with her daughter, the Princess, and the Prince, hardly in a condition for such 'onoccasion meets his fiancee for the first time. After the Duchess and Prince have made their adieus, Lutzannounces the arrival of Count Von Mark, who acquain ts Karl Franz of the King's illness and asks that he willreturn to Karlsberg. This the Prince refuses to do, but his dear old Doctor Engel persuades him. There is asorrowful farewell with Kathie and he swears he will come bock.
ACT III
SCENE-A Room of State in the Royal Palace at Karlsberg. (Two years later)
We arrive back at the Palace at Karlsberg and find a Ball In progress. Here Van Mark announces thebetrothal of Karl Franz, who is now King, to the Princess. During the evening, Toni, the waiter, arrives with amessage and roses from Heidelberg. The thoughts of Karl Franz are thus directed bock to the Doctor (nowdead), Detlef and his friends. He sees them in a vision and resolves to go back to Heidelberg prior to hismarriage.
ACT IVSCENE-Same as Act I. (Next day)
The Princess arrives at Heidelberg, at the Inn of the "Three Golden Apples'.' before him and pleadswith Kathie; as a result Kathie induces the King to believe she is happy with her affianced husband with whomshe is about to leave for Vienna. We find Hubert engaged to Grelchen, much to the disgust of Mr. Lutz. So'the Duchess is highly satisfied in that the I<ing forgets the post and makes the Princess his Queen.
