The movie was a fairly realistic representation of how people with intellectual disabilities are treated in our society. Forrest Gump was:

Ignored

Avoided

Overlooked

Bullied

Called Names

Overall, Forrest Gump created many positive situations, but there were very few people around him who appreciated what he was able to do.

Movie Portrayal:

Forrest Gump

Sound and Fury is definitely a realistic representation since it is a documentary. The family experienced:

Pressure to get a cochlear implant

Discrimination

Conflict within their own family and community

The movie also accurately represented the beliefs of the deaf community including the beliefs that:

Deafness is not a disability

Cochlear implants take away the importance of deaf culture

Movie Portrayal: Sound and

Fury

Thoughts about 18 Wounds

BEFORE FILMS It is very sad that the church is

failing to meet the needs of this population

It is so sad that many Christians advocate abortions for babies who will have disabilities

Our culture has come so far, but this population is still being marginalized in many ways

Made me realize how very broken our world and culture really are

AFTER FILMS These films helped me to see that

just because someone might be affected by these wounds, it does not mean that they cannot live productive lives

I need to be very careful how I think about people with disabilities

The 18 wounds have obvious emotional affects and more subtle emotional affects

Source of Truth

My Source of Truth: The Bible The Bible says:

Luke 14: 12-13“He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.”

Christians need to reach out and include all individuals, including those with disabilities in everything that we do.
