FUNCTIONAL TESTS.NEW FEATURES

DPF.Regeneration made easy

Functional tests are an essential part of Snap-on’s software that help you to identify what the faults are, but also assist you in fixing the vehicle. Functional tests are split into 2 types – Actuator Tests and Special Functions.

Actuator tests are where we can start to work out what the problem is – an actuator test sends a message through the diagnostic tool to a specific part of the car requesting it to operate. For example if a car is overheating, you may want to test that the cooling fan is working correctly. Snap-on diagnostic software allows you to send a message to the vehicle requesting the fan to ‘turn on’, so you can quickly identify if this is working as it should.

There are hundreds of new actuator tests in 14.4 that allow you to carry out these practical tests on a vehicle. These include tests on a BMW’s Electronic Immobilizer, BMW’s Electronic Fuel Pump as well as the VTG transfer box. In Landrover, actuator tests have been added to allow you to carry out ABS function tests on the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery 3. Within Mercedes, the functions have been expanded to allow further testing of the aircon system, headlamp control, steering column module and the steering

aquisition model across various models. In Toyota we have a whole range of actuator tests added to the main body control module which will now allow you to work on items such as the headlights, door locks, window controls, indicators and many other items.

The other functional tests that our software covers are the ‘special functions’. These special functions do two things. They firstly allow you to put a vehicle into service mode, so that you can carry out a repair. And secondly they allow you to programme a new item to a vehicle – for example if you replace an injector, you need to programme that injector to that vehicle – special functions allow you to do this. Again we have added a number of special functions to our software at 14.4. We now have coverage in Renault that incorporates the ‘change pad function’ in a Megane III, as well as new functionality to programme the battery monitoring system on a Ford Kuga, Focus and Ranger. We also now have the ability to adjust the fuel additive resets on a Mazda 3 and Mazda 5, as well as being able to reset the air con systems and the lambda values on a Mercedes.

DPF regeneration procedure on a Ford B-Max

Dealing with DPF regeneration can be something that strikes fear into many technicians. It’s the modern day version of the old problems we used to see when catalytic converters were first brought in. But it can be dealt with simply.

Added to the 14.4 software is extended functionality to cover DPF regeneration on the Ford B-Max and Ford Fiesta. But don’t forget this is just adding to the DPF regeneration coverage already included in Snap-on software – DPF regeneration functions are covered across a wide range of manufacturers in our software including VAG, Ford Renault, Toyota, BMW, Mazda and PSA.

DPF regeneration through Snap-on diagnostic scantools makes what could be a complicated subject simple. In the Scantool menu simply select Manual Regeneration. This will then allow you to carry out either a static or dynamic regeneration (stationary or moving regeneration). Simply select the correct menu headings and follow the on screen instructions.

FUNCTION - Disabling the injector on a Nissan Micra

EXPLANATION - New content allows you to disable the injectors on a Nissan Petrol. So instead of pulling off the spark plugs to check for a misfire – you can simply diasable the injectors via your Snap-on scantool and 14.4 software and from here test for a misfire.

FUNCTION - Resetting fuel additive values

EXPLANATION - After completing work on the DPF additive system you can carry out the service functions necessary to get the vehicle back in full working order and remove warning messages for DPF fuel additive.

FUNCTION - Electronic Fuel Pump on a BMW

EXPLANATION - The 14.4 coverage has introduced new functionality that allows you to read and clear DTC’s, view live data and perform function tests on the Electronic Fuel Pumps of a BMW 1, 3, 5, 7, X3, X5, and Z4 Series.

FUNCTION - Resetting the battery monitoring system

EXPLANATION - Following the replacement of a battery in a Ford Kuga, Focus or Ranger, the battery monitoring system needs to be reset. This function allows you to do this and ensure the new battery life is optimised.

FUNCTION - Actuation tests and special functions added to Mercedes

EXPLANATION - Enhancements to the Mercedes range of actuation tests have been added to assist with repairs to the aircon system on a Mercedes, allowing tests to be carried out as well as resetting the system. Plus other vital procedures including resetting of the lambda values, DPF regeneration and injector coding.

FUNCTION - Actuator tests added for the main body controller

EXPLANATION - Tests have been added across the Toyota range to allow you to carry out system tests on a whole range of Toyota functions including all lighting systems, turning signals, locks, wiper power and the security horn.

FUNCTION - Change pad function added to Megane III

EXPLANATION - After changing the brake pads on a Renault Megane III you are required to carry out a change pad function to code the new pads to the vehicle. The new 14.4 software has this feature included.

FUNCTION - ABS function tests

EXPLANATION - Actuator tests have been added on the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery 3 that allow you to carry out tests of the ABS system.
