Knowledge enhancement for modelling in climate change: capacity building in South,
West and East Africa
The need for capacity
Climate change dilemma: how will different regions be affected?
There are many existing and emerging datasets for meaningful insight
Capacity for modeling in the region is very low
2
objectives
Together with AgMIP leadership: Plan and coordinate AgMIP SSA research kick-off, mid-
term and write-up workshops Facilitate publication of AgMIP SSA research teams’
Integrated regional assessments (crop, climate and economic modelling)
With availability of additional funds, coordinate 2 additional training workshops on integrated regional assessments
Modeling: Assessing the impact of climate change on maize production in small-holder systems in Kenya, Malawi and Ghana
3
Activities
Prepare training curricula and where needed example datasets
Coordinate AgMIP-SSA Training steering group (SSA-TSG) to lead and oversee training activities Coordination unit + 2 nominees from each team Training needs are identified through this group Explore other means of addressing desired training
needs not addressed in SSA-Wide meetings Prepare, in coordination with AgMIP leadership,
key materials and information for publication on AgMIP website
4
Modeling
AfSIS sentinel site and MVP sites Nkhata Bay in Malawi (trials/agronomic survey data) Sauri in Kenya (trials/agronomic survey data/economic) Mwadame in Malawi (agronomic survey data/economic) Ejura in Ghana (trials data)
Long-term daily climate data available for some sites
Agronomic yield survey to be organized
Crop Models: DSSAT and APSIM
5
Communication within and without
Establish a database of crop/climate/ regional economic modelers in SSA with expertise
Maintain a mailing list of modelers (crop, climate, economics)---Internal and external Results from AgMIP research Key findings from other climate change-related
initiatives
Posts in AgMIP websites

Publications as book chapters and or journal articles in a special issues
Anticipated outcomes
45 scientists trained on and equipped with integrated regional assessments tools
At least 15 draft manuscripts prepared for publication as book chapters
a climate change informed community of scientific experts and modellers established in SSA through a network coordinated by AfNet
at least 3 crop cultivars’ genetic coefficients (maize and sorghum) added in DSSAT and APSIM crop modules, resulting from direct activities of key staff in this project
strong linkages established between African climate change institutions and pioneer community of modellers in the developed world
