Kypseli is a neighbourhood in Ath- ens,off Patission street, where the Ar-chaeological museum and the big parkcalled Pedion Areos are located. Themain attraction in Kypseli is FokoinosNegri, a pedestrian street in the heart ofthe area. It is a long strip of grass, trees,seating areas, fountains and statues, sur-rounded on both sides by cafes, restau-rants and shops. It’s always lively andbusy, with people walking up and down,sitting around and enjoying the place.Although Kypseli is in the centre of Ath-ens it has a unique aura. Usually thereare not too many tourists around andsomeone can easily find some greatrestaurants, good bakeries, and lively lo-cal markets on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The fact that there are a lot of lit- tletheatres in the area and some art- istsstudios, makes it a bohemian one. Theold fruit and vegetables market wassaved from demolition by the lo- calcommunity, who use it for communi- tyevents and exhibitions, as well as anorganic market on Saturday mornings.There are many art noveau-ish styleapartment blocks, with stylish doorwaysand stairways. Kypseli means ‘beehive’ inGreek, and it’s apparently one of themost densely populated areas of the city.
